Fender Champ on Layla?

I was looking at Fender Champs on eBay, and one guy said Clapton used "two of these exact siverface Champs" on the Layla sessions.

I thought Clapton used a tweed Champ. Am I remembering wrong, or is this guy full of it?

Either way, check out his auction. Does this rig look like a lot of fun, or what?

Re: Fender Champ on Layla?

I always understood that it was a Tweed champ.

I can get VERY close to that sound with mine....like....scary close.

Re: Fender Champ on Layla?

SF Champs are cool in their own right, but they're definitely not as legendary as the tweed Champs.

They're also nowhere near as expensive.

EDIT: that rig looks sweet!

Re: Fender Champ on Layla?

clapton went between lots of amps back then, he had been using marshalls and fenders. But i wouldnt doubt he used the siverfaces on that recording. he didnt really start using tweeds till later on, like way later on.

Re: Fender Champ on Layla?

I read a interview with Tom Dowd A few years ago.(I think we all can agree Mr Dowd was the only one at that those session who's memory wasn't marred by substance abuse) I can't find the article anywhere to factuate it. But According to Tom, Clapton used a Tweed Champ, And Duane used a BF Princeton Reverb that E.C. bought with him as a back up.

BTW, My 5F2-A clone nails that Bell Bottom Blues tone.:D

I think I've seen that interview. I'm sure it was a tweed Champ. Clapton also used a tweed Twin Reverb on and off. Probably still does. It was his favorite amp.

Interesting...I read that interview too. And I remember him saying it WAS a silverface Champ. Just what I remember...if I'm remembering wrongly it sure wouldn't be the first time. But I was looking at a silverface Champ to buy at the time, and that's why I read the interview in the first place, and why I ended up buying a non-tweed Champ. Lew

Re: Fender Champ on Layla?

Looked this up on a few gear pages and also by doing a google search for "Tom Dowd Eric Clapton Layla Fender Champ"...and every source said it was a TWEED CHAMP. But I could not find the interview with Tom Dowd. Lew

Re: Fender Champ on Layla?

It would be interesting to get ahold of a silverface and a tweed and really give them the once over to see how different they are tonally.

Okay....so I'm just looking for more excuses to bolster the number of old Fender amps I own....
