Fender clean, Marshall OD

I'm looking for an amp combo, or halfstack (needs to be loud enough for stagework).

But, I want it to be fender cleans..the beautil articulate cleans, and with slight OD that perfect blues tone (especially with a strat)
but I also play other music. I need plenty of distortion, and I want Marshall distortion--the thickness and chunk of a marshall overdrive.

Any suggestions?

and for how much do they sell normally?

Re: Fender clean, Marshall OD

A Fender 2x12 combo on top of a Marshall halfstack and an A/B box.

lol, what screamingdaisy said

This is what guitar players have been looking for since guitar amplification began, and the only solution so far has been to just bite the bullet and get both.

However, Jeff H seems to be pretty pleased with his Jeff Seal modded JCM800. Apparently it does the Fender clean thing pretty well, and obviously has the Marshall crunch (given that its an 800)

Re: Fender clean, Marshall OD

And, may I just add that I've recently decided to make this happen for myself as well. I plan on changing my rig to a 1987x through a 4x12, and a 65' twin reverb. I've never played an 87, but I love Marshall's dirty sounds, and I already know how great a twin reverb is, so I can't see myself ever really needing anything else out of a setup than those two.

Re: Fender clean, Marshall OD

I've gone in a similar route. I did this about 10 years ago. I too was looking for the Holy grail, and elected to go in this direction. I use a 900 50W combo A/b'd with a 69 Fender Super Reverb. As much as I love the Plexi sound (IMO it is the best Amp Marshall ever made) It is just unmanagable. It has to be played very loud to get that legendary Marshall sound, and at lower volumes it just lacks the Crunch we all dseire. IMO look for a Marshall with a Master Volume control. and the Fender of your choice. This is a very versatile way to go. The DSL or TSL and Marshall 2000's are all good in some ways. It is really a matter of what sound will work for you. I am looking to replace my 900 with "something" else. Haven't found it yet. But this works for me!!

Re: Fender clean, Marshall OD

I have a Marshall Power Break (attenuator), so would that solve the plexi problem? ie, would that allow for the classic crunch at managable volumes, or are there drawbacks to this that I'm not yet aware of?

Re: Fender clean, Marshall OD

Check out the Fender Pro Tube Series Concert, Twin, and Pro Reverb.
I had a Concert and it's the only vintage looking combo that has a channel which is pure Fender clean, an OD channel that is everything from blues to metal, and an awesome tube reverb and tremolo. Fender to Marshall in one box that looks like an extra deep Super Reverb. Like most modern Fender creations they don't hold great resale value, so a used one at $800 is well worth the money, considering they listed for $1800 and sold for $1269. I loved mine, but couldn't justify keeping all my amps.
Try one at GC, then imagine it with Svetlana tubes and GT preamp tubes.

Re: Fender clean, Marshall OD

I have an old Pro Reverb and I use a few pedals (different flavors) and once you have that beautiful Fender clean it's hard to settle for 'almost Fender,' which is what you have to do with a lot of two-channel amps.

Re: Fender clean, Marshall OD

The fender concert reverb is a very cool amp. Overall, though, I'd suggest Rivera. Paul Rivera has been hunting down the elusive 'fender and marshall in one box' thing for a long time, and his stuff is built to last.

Re: Fender clean, Marshall OD

See my sig. Jeff Seal does an amazing job on the 2 channel Marshalls. My clean channel is very Fender Blackface/Twin sounding and the OD channel goes from SRV blues crunch to AC/DC to Van Halen and beyond. I've had the modded amp for almost 90 days now, and I have not even unpacked any of my pedals, save my chromatic tuner....it's that good.

If you want to go production amp my choices would be:

DSL 50
Bogner Shiva
Rivera Knucklehead
Fender Pro Concert
Bogner XTC

Re: Fender clean, Marshall OD

id say a fender (you pick the model, pro reverb, etc...) 2X12 combo, there are tons, pick one. add a 2X12 cab below that, and place a marshall dsl2000 50w head on top, and a good a/b box....or run them in stereo, thatd be cool, but than again, maybe it wouldnt work...

In regards to the amp mods, who is Jeff Seal and how to contact him?

www.speakersurgeon.com

PM him here (you can find him in the user list under Jeff Seal), click on his www and send him an e-mail. Nicest guy you'll ever do business with, and if you go with one of his mods you'll never be the same.

You really should check out some boutique stuff. Plexi tone is now at manageable volumes.

I'm in the same situation as many others. I want chimey, shimmering Fender cleans with plexi type distortion and I haven't found both in one head yet.

The THD Flexi brought about one huge grin from me. Playing with the boost option gave me the most heavenly crunchy rich rhythm distortion channel... I was astounded. I think the plexi is the holy grail rhythm channel now, there is no substitutes. No other Marshall can compare to a Marshall Super Lead plexi :32:
