Re: fender custom shop 69 pickups

duncan doesnt have a production late 60's strat type pup, they do have custom shop options and you can get those with no stagger. the closest production pup with flat poles is the ssl2 which is an early 60's type pup with flat poles. they will sound vintagey but different than the cs '69

How about the Jimi set? That’s CS?

never tried the jimi set but i dont believe they are cs, so you may be able to get the flat poled. they are a bit hotter than the cs 69 and may use different wire. probably still in the ball park though

File em flat and see where it takes you?

I wouldn't suggest that. Just order whatever you want with flat poles. I am a fan of flat pole pickups, so I totally understand here. There certainly seems to be a bit of a gap in the production line for late 60s-era pickups, but hey, there are no early or mid or late 70s pickups, either. So I'd have to question what are the characteristics of the pickups you want that aren't in the standard line. Honestly, I don't know- I know what late 50s pickups and early 60s pickups are like, but I don't know how they changed in the late 60s. I don't think I've played many (if any?) pickups from that era, either, so I am genuinely curious.

It was all cost cutting, different and less wire, different flatwork maybe different magnets? (A5, but maybe different characteristics) The result IMO is more scooped, a little bigger bass and more treble than an early 60’s Strat pickup.

Here is a link to a guy that makes 60', 62', 65' and 67' sets. He may make a 69' or later set too, I haven't explored his whole site yet. Apparently he's very well known in Europe.

Edit..... as I read the descriptions of his sets, the 67' set for instance covers the strat sounds from 66' - 73', including the sounds of Jimi's strat. Interesting site.
