Ha...the one I played and almost bought years ago (1994), only had a block of wood in there, nothing special.
The bad part...I bought a $400 Jag-Stang over the $600 Clapton Strat at the time!!! Worse...I passed on a Mesa Maverick 1x12 Prototype Amp on the same damn day!!!

Was it glued or screwed or anything like that, or was it just the pressure of the trem springs holding it in place?

It was a long time ago, but I think it might have been glued. I'm sure someone here has one and can tell you for sure.

The EC Strat is just a traditional Vintage Trem. If you want to remove the block just take it out & adjust it the way you want it set up. I own 2 EC Strats. I have both of them set with the bridge resting on the body & 4 or 5 springs. I like the bridge resting on the body. They stay in tune better & most importantly is they will stay in tune if you break a string. A floating bridge offers you more whamminess(is that even a word?) but the danger or hazard is if a string breaks then your dead in the water. I have also added graphite saddles on both of my EC Strats, but have elected NOT to put locking tuners on them. A conventional Strat can be problematic in getting the bridge setup properly(and that term means different things to different players). IMHO the easiest way to set it up to where it can be the most dependable is to set the bridge to rest on the body(I find the guitar sustains better this way). I use a piece of paper and I keep adjusting it until it holds that piece of paper really snug. Then without the paper I just check to make sure it is resting snug against the body! I like graphite saddles, graphite nut & locking tuners.
