Fender EVH WOlfGang Pick up replacements

First yes I"ve googled it and searched here just going another round to see what recently people have been doing with this.

My Les Pauls are my Main's and I use the JB/Jazz Combo. I want to change the Pick ups in the EVH and don't know how the JB will blend with it as its Basswood with Arched Maple top and Maple neck and Fret Board. The EVH is weird as my Les Pauls are Tighter sounding with the Jb's which are known for the Loose bottom end. I'm looking mostly in the Duncan Line and play a mix of Classic/Hard Rock some 80's metal. I don't want my looser bottom end of my Les Pauls but also don't want blazing metal

My main problem is I'm not familiar with Basswood and how it reacts.... in looking at EQ charts of pickups and what they deliver should I expect more or less of said frequencies when installing in basswood?

Thanks,
Matt

Re: Fender EVH WOlfGang Pick up replacements

It would be helpful to know how you find the guitar to be tone wise. Is it bright or maybe mid heavy? From my experience the JB can be fantastic in one guitar, but not so good in others as it can come across as piercing. There are a number of cool alternatives. If the guitar is mid heavy an sh-14 can sound great as it did in one of my guitars. Also I have read that the perpetual burn is similar to the JB but tighter. Anyways I am sure you will get a lot of cool suggestions and welcome to the forum!

To loose in the bottom.. not enough tight definition.. the mids and highs are ok or maybe a bit dull.
Like I said really is to do with questioning the basswood and how it will react to said Eq frequencies
That r listed on Duncan’s web site . Example: if a pickup says it has little bottom will it actually have more cause of the basswood or will it have even less..

Just a frustrating thing looking for pickups

Re: Fender EVH WOlfGang Pick up replacements

Well went with the SH6 and Jazz ,, we'll see how it sounds

Re: Fender EVH WOlfGang Pick up replacements

That's a good combo for breathing life into that axe and should give you the tightness you desire

Re: Fender EVH WOlfGang Pick up replacements

For future reference, the Custom coils are very versatile & work well with a wide variety of magnets. Lets you dial in the EQ & output you want.

Re: Fender EVH WOlfGang Pick up replacements

I think the Distortion will work out pretty good for you, I was going to recommend the regular (ceramic magnet) Custom too. You might not be aware, but the pickup cavities in your EVH might require some tinkering to get the legs of the pickup baseplates to fit. See here: https://forum.seymourduncan.com/sho...-fit-EVH-Wolfgang-Standard-(Indonesian-Model)

Thanks and yes I'm well aware of the base plate issue..just dropped off to my Tech ,, he already knew when I talked to him about it,, said its cake and he is making it so I can a just the height. I do alot of my own work on my guitars but I can get rather impatient so he can do his thing on this one lol

Re: Fender EVH WOlfGang Pick up replacements

Well the Sh6 was a bad move.. should have went Sh5..it sounds horrible. Blazing mids and highs.. which yes the eq graph shows more mids and highs, but thought it was worth a shot. My head eq can't tame it and I'm not playing with my pedal board eq everytime I make a switch. I don't have to with any of my other guitars. Sh6 is extremely brittle in this guitar. The search goes on or try the Sh5.

Re: Fender EVH WOlfGang Pick up replacements

Is the Wolfgang basswood? If so that is probably where the club is coming from, although I’m surprised that even the SH-6 isn’t tight enough for you. The SH-5 definitely won’t help, it has less bass but it’s not nearly as tight and immediate as the SH-6.

Have you considered an active set? Doesn’t get much more well behaved than that.

I think it’s not a problem of tightening the low end anymore, just with the strident treble and upper mids.

The Sh5 has more bass ,less mids and about same amount of highs as the Sh6.. But yes Basswood, I'm not really a Active pickup guy.. Its always a gamble,, just more frustrating with the Wolfgang as you have to customize to fit. Is what it is.. I'll get it there.

Tore out the distortion and replaced with a Jb ... love the result

Re: Fender EVH WOlfGang Pick up replacements

There's a reason why the JB is the most popular aftermarket pickup in history! Glad you found something that works!

Oh man this comment makes me happy.

I remember the first time I heard a JB, it is truly a *magical* pickup.

No idea why I just didn’t go with it first... it’s in all my Les Pauls.. just thought it wouldn’t mess well.. I was wrong..lol
