fender jaguar hb pickup options

Evening all,

I've got a jag bass hb body I'm looking to chuck an sd pickup into but I'm not sure which is best. I like the look of the musicman upgrade, smb4 I think it is but the dimensions shown appear to be larger than the routing in my bass. Can someone recommend the best pickup to fit it please?

Re: fender jaguar hb pickup options

What are the dimensions of the route? It's hard to say what fits best without knowing the dimensions?

Welcome to the forum.

If you have the Squier Jaguar Bass H, the pickup rout is of the same dimensions as the EMG-35 series, SD Blackouts for Bass humbucker, Bartolini and various other manufacturers' "soapbar" pickups.

At the risk of being accused of spamming, I might just happen to have a "surplus" Blackouts bass 'bucker. ;)

I am in the UK.

I may well be interested if it happens to be a bridge pup? Don't know if the blackouts are made for set positions or not? I'm also UK

Which exact model do you have?

The hyperlink does not work.

Re: fender jaguar hb pickup options

The model on fenders website that has the same pickup arrangement as mine is the vintage modified jaguar bass special HB. it has one large ish pup in the bridge position that I possibly mistakenly thought to be a music man style pup

Re: fender jaguar hb pickup options

That will be an EMG-35 family of "soapbar" bass pickups, referred to in post #3. Musician type pickups will not fit without modification.

SD Blackouts for Bass humbuckers are not calibrated for specific positions. One caveat I must mention. The "natural" sound of this pickup is heavily mid-scooped. Clear high frequencies, boosted-sounding low frequencies. Almost as if the instrument already had an EMG-EXB built-in and turned up to maximum. Not as much midrange as you might have hoped.

Re: fender jaguar hb pickup options

Thought it was probably soapbar pups when I saw them on the SD website. Presumably the STS-2S-BO active tone circuit will help the sound of the pups? I can cope with a slight loss of mid if i've got active control :)

Re: fender jaguar hb pickup options

The Blackouts EQ is a two-band affair. Although the upper frequency correction band can be set into a high mid range, this is not the same as having a dedicated mid EQ control. Obviously, rolling off both top and bottom would leave relatively more mids but this might not be what you desire.
