fender m-80 pops and buzzes

i got an old fender m-80 solid state amp (circa 1991) that pops loudly when i plug in my guitar and buzzes when i take my fingers off the strings.

i took it apart and had to replace the two input jacks... they are these special 9-pin black plastic square fender jacks and they were kinda messed up (pieces loose inside) and it looked like the original owner had re-soldered them for some reason and he did a horrible job. some lugs were bare, no solder at all... others weren't completely soldered, etc.

the power cord on the amp was missing the ground prong when i got it. so i replaced the cord with another one... i used a DMM to test and see which wire went to which prong and where it was connected on the amp. i figured the cord needed to have to ground prong to be sure it was grounded properly.

i also noticed a spark when one of the pots touched the chasis.. this was after i replaced one of the input jacks and the power cord. one of the input jacks i couldn't resolder because after i took the original off, some of the copper on the PCB came off, as did most of the metal rings around the holes, so there was nothing left to solder to.

is it vital to have both input jacks wired into the circuit? could that cause the spark/buzzing/popping? what else could cause this? i've double checked everything to make sure i wired it back together right. since some of the copper strips came off the circuit board, could i just solder some jumper wire to connect the points?

thanks

Re: fender m-80 pops and buzzes

My 1st thought when I hear someone say `Pops and Buzzes' would be filter caps. But now that you mention a jr. tinker has been in there, It could be a host of other problems.:eyecrazy: Those PCB mounted jacks are notorious for problems (If you plan on keeping the amp? Have switchcrafts hardwired in)
If it's a sloppy solder job by the previous owner? there could be solder balls floating around, as stressed PCB, I could go on and on. Maybe best to have a Tech look at it.
