Fender Mexico Spraying Practices

Okay, I bought this guitar new way back in 2001. I honestly can't remember what year the serial number says it was originally. I have had about a million different necks on it and the year it was made escapes me. I'm pretty sure it was a Z0 or 2000 model. In the picture it has a '98 USA neck on it, which is why it says '1998'.. but it's not.. it's actually a '00

The question is.. what colours did they make? It's hard to tell in this picture, but underneath the black is a pink-ish sparkly colour. It seems too light to be burgundy mist, but too metalic to be shell pink.

Any ideas what colours the Mexican factory sprayed back then?

Oh, btw.. the black was factory done.. I chipped a bit off and saw pink underneath.. and just kept chipping more off.. heh

that pinkish colour may be the bounding/sealing coat they sprayed on the first before colour coats... or maybe it's a metallic base coat and they used see thru blue for the colour coats

it's a bad photo to see any sort of finnish colour from but it does look simular to the blue finnish on my 1999 MIM Tele... it has a weird metallic blue that when you hold it at different angles in light you get slightly different shades of blues and even a slight purple

since its matte its prolly sealer or something, cool guitar though

On topic: I've heard of guys sanding down their MIM finish and finding another color under it. This is not uncommon at all. Fender will respray black or white bodies if they are running short on another color.

The most common scenario is to sand down something like Lake Placid Blue or Candy Apple Red, and finding white or black underneath. I have never heard of someone sanding down black and finding another color underneath it, but it's within the realm of possibility. They could just as easily run out of black Strats as any other color.

That said, I don't think Fender has ever made the MIM guitars in any sort of pinkish hue. I think the sealer theory is the most likely.

Dunno but that blue color sounds like the one my Z0 Strat has, it was called Midnight Blue and they discontinued it only a year later (2001-2002).

Midnight Blue will look from totally blue to totally purple depending on angle/lighting.
(and BTW, I find it to be totally cool :9:)

I like Midnight Blue, but I find it a bit too dark in some kinds of light. I'm more of a Lake Placid Blue fan.

I'm pretty sure the OP's Strat is black though.

Sorry my bad, I was talking about WhoFan's strat.

Yeah, that looks like a black one and like you so colorfully said (wink wink) we'll prolly gonna need some closer photos but it looks like a sealer to me as well...
