Fender Pro Jr. Tube/Speaker Options

I've got a Fender Pro Jr. With stock pres and GT EL84-S powertubes and a stock speaker. Could I get a tighter, more british sound if I replaced the 2 preamp tubes with 12AX7 Ms and put in a celestion G10 Vintage speaker?

This amp sound great, but it gets pretty muddy when you max out the volume. Are there any type of modifications you can do to help it clear up a bit when it's cranked?

I usually don't run mine completely cranked, because of that. Just rolling back the volume is simpler than modding, and it's not as though it really gets louder after a certain point (around 4-5) anyway...just more distorted and "muddy".

Far as the tubes go, I'm not sure what's different about a 12AX7 M, as opposed to a normal 12AX7, though the amp doesn't have to be rebiased for pre-amp tubes, so you can just try out whatever you want, simply by swapping them out.

Mine has a Weber alnico P10R (from back when he still used Jensen's model numbers), but mainly because I blew up the original speaker years ago. I have no experience with the G10.

Experimenting with the tubes and speakers will definitely make big differences in the tone of the thing, though. Maybe somebody will come along that knows of a particularly clear 12ax7 you could try.

i'd replace all the tubes with a set of JJ's from Eurotubes...tell him the sounds you are looking for and he'll match you up a set to get you as close as he can with tubes...as far as speakers...i think you are on the right track with the G10?!
