Fender reverb?

Sorry for the ignorant question, but I was just wondering . . . how do Fender amps get their lush reverb? Is it just a certain type of reverb tank, or is there some circuit involved? Could you easily mod any amp to have the same type of reverb?

Re: Fender reverb?

There is more than one kind of Fender verb but in short to answer your question...it's a muxture of several thing....a good reverb circuit, a good pan, etc...all those things make a lush reverb.

Re: Fender reverb?

Sorry slightly OT !
. . . i saw (last night) that Fender's Reverb tank is a cool $499.00 @ MF !!!
I always thought it is like $800-900.00 USD !

In my eyes, these are the best reverbs ever made . . .
. . . but someone will jump in and tell me diff.
Oh well, i still like the sound of this unit !!!

Fender outboard verbs are cool but VERY differnt from the built in BF Era reverb...those reissues are actually pretty good after you swap the stock tubes in them...Fender used a 6V6 in place of a 6K6 and stock the verb on the reissues is actually a little distorted.

. . . still, is it worth the money ?

I am thinking of getting an amp from Scott_F, and a Fneder Verb unit like this, or do you think Celtic has better 'verb units ?

Thanx

Re: Fender reverb?

i have a bf dlx reverb and a ri fender unit. there is a difference but both are sweet. if you are having a bf type amp built i would just use the bf type circut. if you want you could have a dwell knob added with out much hassle.
if you a having a tweed style built then id go for the outboard unit. i saw kid ramos play an old tele into a reverb unit into a bassman and the tone was to die for!!

The Fender reissue is worth having but IMO the originals are better units...but they cost a good bit more than a new reissue and you can even pick up a used reissue for ever less money!

Like Jeremy said if you're getting a BF knock off the built in reverb is fine, actually most people prefer the built in BF Verb, if you're getting a tweed knock off, since those don't come with verb the outboards are great...and also like Jeremy said a tweed Fender and outboard very is a classic (and KILLER) tone. I don't think Scott does an outboard verb (although Im sure he could...those units are very simple) and if he did it would be a copy of the fender Im sure. If you're still looking at a tweedbassman go on and get an outboard reverb just be sure to swap the 6V6 out in favor of a 6K6 and you'll be VERY happy.

Re: Fender reverb?

As far as the originals, the Hammond-Gibbs tank is a lot different sounding than the generic Accutronics stuff that's available lately. No wonder some people hate spring reverb...the standalone tank has dwell, tone and mix, it gives you a lot more options as far as delay time over the BF hardwired circuit. The output impedance also contributes to a stronger reverb signal...
RI vs. original---no contest. I've never heard a RI that even comes close to the old tanks---ask Kid Ramos; he travels with his own early 60's tank.

Re: Fender reverb?

I was talking specifically about the BF reverb, that's the one that I like the best. I was just wondering if it was a certain reverb tank that I could just buy to put in my Traynor (which does everything that I want it to, EXCEPT really thick, lush reverb)

Re: Fender reverb?

You could try a 3 spring Accutronics...They make them in both the long and short models (not sure what's in the new Traynors). AES has them...I've tried them in a few BF Fenders and it almost gets you into Eno land.

You mean you can install one in to your amp as a mod? Like for example with mine I can put one into my Laney AOR? Are there shops with established reputation for doing these mods ?

Re: Fender reverb?

I's a great circuit (BF). I actually in the Brenna prototype, went with a 3 springs, short tank from accutronics. I did use the Fender specs on it though. There are a variety of different types of accutronics tanks. Different impedances and what not. You do need to shop carefully when replacing a tank. I also added that dwell control jeremy alludes to. It is very effective to my ears. I agree that reverb just doesnt' get much better.

The Traynor has a long, dual spring reverb tank . . . does the third spring make a difference? The reverb that it has already is good, but it's not quite umm . . . liquidy enough when I try playing some surf type stuff.

Re: Fender reverb?

Yep---match the input and output impedance and you too can have a 3-spring pan and go head-to-head with Rypdal and Lanois.

That Dano pedal is all-electronic, no springs. And the last thing you want to do with a standalone reverb is kick it...My bass player used to walk into mine allatime---that rates 150 lbs/sq in on the 'onstage cringe-o-meter'.
