Fender Strat, 1970 Fender Super Reverb & what?

This is a topic that has been discussed before, but is a little bit different.

In another thread I talked about my Tex-Mex Stratocaster being set up to Fender specs, to reduce the string buzz when I really pick and crank hard on the string bends.

I have a stock 1970 Fender Super Reverb with Svetlana power tubes. All other 12AT7/12AX7 tubes are Telefunken. The amp is very throaty sounding.

Now...in your opinion, what would be the ideal floor effect to get that longer sustain, but kind of clean sound. Like SRV, but a tad bit more sus on the end?

I have had an Ibanez Tube Screamer but it was not quite enough on the sus end of things.

Thank you.

The Fulltone Fulldrive II is a killer TS Type pedal. Did you like the tone of the TS but you just want more sustain or do you want a different tone all together? Also, how far can you turn the amp up?

Re: Fender Strat, 1970 Fender Super Reverb & what?

I have this same setup..and believe it or not...this is the trick..two tube screamers and a really loud amp! :) It takes some fiddling but I have been using a buddy of mine's tube screamer in conjunction with mine, and with the amp on about 7..I'm nailing some of that SRV sustain stuff....trust me, it can do it (I also have, not just a stock Super Reverb, but a 1970 Super Reverb)

Re: Fender Strat, 1970 Fender Super Reverb & what?

Thats why I was asking about the volume level...it's a 50 watt amp...it has to be cranked a bit to sound good and if you can really push it you'll get tons of natural sustain out of it...then by using 2 tubescreamers (one as a clean boost) you'll get all the sustain you could ever want!

Eternity from Lovepedal....I have a friend who uses an old BF Super rev, and he is in raves over the Eternity, and I think about the same:D
Great pedal.

Re: Fender Strat, 1970 Fender Super Reverb & what?

or there's always Robben Ford's new favorite combination

Silverface Super Reverb + Hermida Zendrive

Re: Fender Strat, 1970 Fender Super Reverb & what?

I've read only good things about that Eternity pedal. They aren't cheap, and I think he even stopped production for a while until recently.

But all the comments I've seen have been good ... not just mostly good, but universally good.

the guy who invented fire said:
Well...if you want to split hairs it's 45 watts but the difference between 45 and 50 is very very small...
I thought it was 43 watts, but who's counting? :)

It really depends on the particular amp and power tubes.

as I said in another thread, they're a perfect club amp, since they get a warm overdrive at reasonable levels.

Re: Fender Strat, 1970 Fender Super Reverb & what?

when I first heard sound clips of the Eternity I wanted to try it but at the time they were not taking orders, then when they started again the price was pretty high...last time I looked they were over $275 and the wait was over a month...

The wait doesn't bother me that much...hell, I've been waiting on an Analogman King of Tone since July 05 and there is no telling when it'll be done but $300 for an overdrive is a little high...

Re: Fender Strat, 1970 Fender Super Reverb & what?

yes, a little high.
it might discourage me too, but some of these type things have pretty good resale value.

Re: Fender Strat, 1970 Fender Super Reverb & what?

Get a Keeley baked TS9. That should help you get that extra push for sustain.

Re: Fender Strat, 1970 Fender Super Reverb & what?

I have been playing thru a Super Reverb (1968 I think) since 88 or 89. It is my all time favorite amp for great clean slightly overdriven tones IMHO it is the best when you need a fair amount of volume. I also use a Tubescreamer. I set the vloume, tone, and gain all about 75%. I tend to keep the volume on the amp at about 3½ to 4. The logic is I use the TS9 more like I would use a channel switching type of set up. On occasions I willleave the TS( on and roll the volume down on the guitar to get a Wind cries Mary type of tone (with a slightly more aggressive sound). Prior to me using the TS9 I was using a Boss Super OD. This also is a very respectable pedal at about $40.00 its a good OD device....... not in the same league tonally as the TS9 but a good pedal. Keep in mind I am not trying to sound like SRV..... but I can get that sound if I want too.

Re: Fender Strat, 1970 Fender Super Reverb & what?

Thanks for the feedback.
I usually play no higher than 4, as the other guys complain.

If one uses two tube screamers, doesn't that mud up your tone, being two floor effects between the guitar and amp?

Using 2 pedals won't muddy up your tone...my pedal board has 9 pedals on it...no worries. Using 2 tubescreamers is quite common amoung some players...I have even seen guys use 3 at a time.

Re: Fender Strat, 1970 Fender Super Reverb & what?

I've used a lot more pedals before ...buddy of mine used 14 once and that didn't muddy up his tone....at all
