Figuring out transformer specs

The Drama Dude
Probably too obscure of a question for here but given a power transformer of unknown origin and unknown spec, is there a way to find out/calculate its specs? I'm specifically interested in ascertaining max available heater current.

Re: Figuring out transformer specs

I really can't help ya here. There might be a way but I strongly suggest you go to the ampgarage forum and/or ted weber's forum for sucha query...

Re: Figuring out transformer specs

Without a tranny number, there is no real way to tell.
Typically the size is a "decent" barometer of capacity. That is to say, if your PT is similar to a PT from a Fender Twin, and the heater wires are similar size.......
Otherwise, I would not use it, near, what you might think would be max for its size.
I have built amps (not for sale, or of consequence) that used unknown PT with no problem. But again, I underrated them a bit based on their size when compared to a PT from a 50 Marshall or Fender.
If this amp is important, I would not use this PT.....save it for a later project when you can risk a heater-winding failure.
good luck

Re: Figuring out transformer specs

Only if you have a variety of comparable transformers to measure. You could find out who's identical by measuring capacitance, inductance, resistance, specific weight etc.
