Filling a Pickup cavity

alright, so i have a Kramer Baretta neck thru project guitar that i've been working on lately. Someone tried to Van-Halen Stripe it and did a REALLY bad job of it. I've already re-fretted it and im ready to re-paint it. It is an HH configuration. I'm wondering, is there any way to fill up the neck pickup cavity to make it a one-pickup guitar. The actualy finishing of the guitar is no problem, i'm pretty good with paint and hav re-finished in the past. Wht should i use to fill the cavity?? Wood?? thanks for any suggestions

definately use wood.. I used wood filler, and altho it worked, it expands over time, so it takes lots of sanding, and Ive ended up repainting it months later because it was still noticable..

Wood filler is a synthetic material that dries and sands, bonds to wood, and takes paint or stain easily. You can find it at most hardware stores. I'd buy a small piece of basswood, or alder (both seemed to be used in the production of the baretta series it looks like) and try to match the right one to the rest of the body. Then I find it easier to rout out the pickup cavity into a more usable shape ( a square/ rectangle) and fit the piece of hardwood that you bought into the void. Or if yo can cut it into the shape of a pickup god - speed!
After setting the wood piece into the slot (with wood glue of coarse) , add some of that handy wood filler to the gaps around the sides of the freshly added piece. Let it dry and plane it flat with a small hand plane, or block and sand paper. Prime or paint or stain away! Keep in mind the wood filler may need to be re-applied once the moisture from those products is absorbed. I have had instances in the past where the filler shrank back into the crack, and I needed to re-do the filling.
Take your time, and enjoy a job well done
