Re: Finally joined the weird shaped Fender club

Alright, now THAT'S a cool axe finally :D

I really do love the 66 necks...they seem to have made them with really wide, low frets, and they have a flattish shape to them that's just perfect for me.

That one seems to have some sort of bizarre history, with the gold trem, strange pickguard and the white covers switched out for black... looks great anyway, how does it play? :smokin: I still maintain that the Mustang would probably be the overall "best" Fender for people if they'd give it a chance... Especially for people switching over from Gibson, with the Stang's heavier sound and Gibson-like scale.

Welcome to the 66 Stang club :D

Good spotting...though I guess I shouldn't be surprised given your knowledge of the weird Fenders...

All the hardware is gold - I have the original gold bridge and gold volume pot cover piece ready to go back on. The cover piece has had an extra hole cut in it for a switch, but I want to put it and the original gold bridge on anyway to match the tailpiece.

She's also been routed for a bridge bucker, hence the replacement pickguard, which looks pretty cool. I also have one of the original white pup covers, so will look into finding a second and then flip them back to white.

It's the 'B' neck model - which (I believe) is slightly wider than the A? Whatever, it has a nice fatness and chunk to it.

At present it doesn't play great - action is WAAAY high and the strings were last changed when Elvis was a young pup chasing squirrels with his airgun - but the sound is just what I had in my head. I spen the first 10 minutes just playing 'Wipeout ' over and over cos that's what the guitar seemed to want me to do...then I started experimenting with the pups and sounds. Beautiful clean and goes really well with light overdrive from the Red Snapper, for that cranked 50s rock n roll feel. The sound really dictates what I want to play on it at the moment, like nothing else I've ever played - I need to get it set up and experiment fully.

But yeah, thanks - great club to join. Old Mustangs just look so cool...yours are killer.

Re: Finally joined the weird shaped Fender club

Yep, B necks are the standard width rather than the narrow ones... Oddly with the APS 2s in mine (low output as they are) I get in a more modern mindstate while playing it... Wipeout and such is reserved for my Jag :D

And I think with the gold hardware you have something more than a bit rare... Love it. (PS- if you're trying to restore the look, they made/make white switches too)

Thanks - I'll get onto looking into that too.

The guy I bought it off said he'd never seen or heard of gold hardware on a Stang...I guess there's a story there somewhere. As and when she's restored to something like her former glory I'll get some more pics up...
