Great White Malice
Hey friends, many of you emailed me in the past concerning my Laney GH50L that I was about to sell. It is now the time to let it go. :smoker:
You are looking at the most under-rated amplifier currently made, the Laney GH50L. I love this head. I can do any style/music I want with it. Let’s make an analysis.
Inputs : you have the choice between 2 inputs : High and Low. I use the LOW input 90% of the time. The High input is somewhat brighter and aggressive, perfect from modern metal. The LOW input provides a totally vintage tone. Ask our friend Stevo who owns/owned an older Protube model, and he prefered the LOW input much more.
Preamp/EQ : Marshall/fender style tone stack. Switchable (foot or front panel) additionnal gain stage for metalheads, can be simply used as slight solo boost. There’s also a Damp switch, so you can select between early-60 marshall loose/spongy bass, or Hiwatt-style tight bottom.
Tubes : 4 preamps, 2 powers. Very sensitive to tube change (brands). Lot of fun in there! Im including a fresh set of EHEL34 and a mix of JJ/EH 12ax7 in the preamp. The most useful feature : the BIAS switch. You can select between 6L6 and EL34 tubes! Put in a set of 6L6 for Fender style pure clean or and MESA balls. EL34 for the classic british tones. MOREOVER, I installed a set of 1-ohm 2watts BIAS resistor, so you can easily adjust it. It has an BIAS pot inside so you can adjust it ; it is not a fixed bias amp (I hate these!)
Rear panel : the FX loop is tube-buffered, that means better tone of course. It has a separate LEVEL knob, and it has a 3 position switch, so you can TOTALLY bypass the fx loop circuit, put it in SERIES (standard) or PARALLEL. It also features SLAVE jacks, you can slave many amps together, like some of the old vintage amps. It has 5 speakers out jacks! No impedance selector involved, which is a plus.
Technical stuff : I also had the chance to chat with Trace Allen from Voodoo Amps some time ago, we talked about the output transformer, and contrary to some Marshalls, the Laney has a very decent OT and doesnt even need to be changed (he is a pro, he knows is stuff). The PT is toroidal type, so overheating or radiation. Very high class. It also features now lost and gone LCR blue can filter capacitors.
From Laney website : www.laney.co.uk« The GH50L is a single channel master volume style head with footswitchable gain. It is capable of a huge variety of sounds, from sparkling clean through powerful crunch to full on monster tones and everything in between. If tone capable of turning people's heads at 100 yards is what you're after - look no further. As well as astounding tone these heads offer a valve-coupled effects loop and link jacks for slaving several heads together. The GH50L features an ECC83 equipped preamp and EL34 output section, easily switchable for 5881's. The GH50L is designed to be used with the GS412IA and GS412IS cabinets - to enhance the amplifiers huge tonal range and produce stunning tone at any volume. »
The amp is totally mint-looking.
Ive used it on stage/gigs/practice for the last 2 years. I cherrish every piece of gear I own, as you can see on the pictures (to come this weekend). Im asking 475$.
