Re: Finishing a Guitar From Bare Wood
Stewart Macdonald has a good selection of finishing stuff. You might want to look into some of their stuff. I would suggest not trying to finish a guitar you care a lot about, since the chance of you doing a pro-level job on your first try is small. If you want a simpler option, try StewMac's Master Gel finishing product. I'm using that to finish my Warmoth neck.
Do you want to match the color of the body with your neck finish? In that case, the biggest challenge will be mixing the color so that it matches perfectly. If you just want a simple black color, you might have an easier time.
From my limited knowledge, I can say that you'll need to sand the neck between coats, so you'll need some sandpaper. If you're spraying nitro or lacquer, you'll likely need the equipment for that. Stewmac sells it in a spray can, so you might want to look into that. Butnut or Blueline would be able to help you much better than I could.
