First Attempt At An Unplugged Track.........

Musically Mr M

:) I just recorded my first "unplugged" effort (well kind of unplugged) using my new guitar and my trusty ole 424 MKIII. (trying to go old school on this) The sample is called "Openin' Dialogue" and this is the link to it:Click On the Link To "Openin' Dialogue"

I used two tracks of the new guitar-one rhythm and one lead and one fretless bass track. I mic'd the lead guitar with one SM-58 near the bridge and ran the piezo through channel 4 of the mix. Added a bit of verb through the effects bus and came up with this. Take a listen and tell me how you think it turned out. I'm still experimenting with getting a good recorded sound with this Acoustic-Electric thing-a-ma-bob and would really be intrested in getting some good recording tips from you guys (Cuz' U guys R cool like that ) I'm also considering a change in pickup systems on the guitar. (At least the pickup) The preamp does a pretty good job but I think the undersaddle p'up that came on the guitar is kind of chintzy.

Suggestions anyone?

Have a listen and tell me what you think.

Re: First Attempt At An Unplugged Track.........

I have always had trouble getting a good acoustic sound recorded. Recently I purchased a decent condenser mic and was impressed with the improvement. The sound was 'livelier', more sparkle than the dynamic mic . I also experimented with mic positions and found that mic'ing the guitar where the fretboard comes over the body gave me a better sound than mic'ing the bridge (at least with my cheap acoustic). I purchased a large diaphram GT55 at GC for general recording purposes but I have read that smaller diaphram condensers are the mike of choice for acoustic instruments. Overall I was very impressed with the results with the gt55. If I did more acoustic stuff I would probably look into a smaller condenser.
Overall I liked your piece but the guitars seemed to miss a little of that sparkle and life I was referring to above, good playing by the way.
Take my suggestion for what it is worth as I am by no means an acoustic recording expert.
