The OP made it clear from the music he's interested in that he only wants a 5 string, and short scale for 5 string doesn't work very well unless you get one made by somebody who really knows what they're doing ($$$) so I think we can stop recommending Squier VM's and the like.

Well, then I guess it's a good thing that Squire doesn't make a short scale 5 string.

G&L Tribute L-2500 or M-2500, bought second hand. With one of those, you'll be approaching U.S.A. Fender quality for just a few hundred bucks. There's no better bang for the buck IMHO.

I'm gonna second this. Scour the craigslists for one of thems.
Not short scale but the hardware and electronics are top notch, identical to their USA ones. It arguably has the best bass bridge design in the world.
