first coil tapping expirience today

Looking for Real Life
well, i go down to my favorite local shop, and on the used rack, they have this fat tele, so i pick it up, and notice a few other things. A) this thing was like a red sunburst, it was hott. B) Not only did it have a humbucker (yeah it was a duncan) but the neck was routed for a single coil too, i dunno what it was, had an EMGish cover on it & no name, so who knows. C) there was an extra switch, and me, never playing a coil tapped guitar before, about wet myself, and had to go through all of the possible combinations & play them for atleast 15 mins.

I have to say, even though it was only s/h, this was one of the most versatile guitars i've ever played, i woulda taken it over the high end wolfgang on the wall, any day.

so now I'm convinced, i have to tap my strat, split the JB & have it combine with the lil '59. But uh...How do i go about doing this? and how much will it run me? I assume since it'll be tapped I'll have no problems finding a good combination...correct? The jb/59 should have a good mid since everyone & their grandma uses one

Re: first coil tapping expirience today

the only thing I can think of to tell you is to check some of the wiring options in the schematic section of the main site ... basically, you'll probably want to use a mini toggle or a push-pull pot, or you can wire a couple options in to your regular switch.

Re: first coil tapping expirience today

push pull pots work pretty well for coil taps.

Re: first coil tapping expirience today

well what i want is just another tiny 3 way toggle to split a jb into 2 single coils, but yeah, 3 way toggle so i can still play it as just a regular humbucker

but i wanna do this to get ALL usable tones out of a jb/mini 59 set, and i think i should do coil splitting to keep the output high & voice the sound a little better.

do i have to do any routing for this? and what kinda stuff do i need? it's gonna be on a mim strat

Re: first coil tapping expirience today

When I had my two Stag Mags in one guitar, I split them like this using an on-off-on SPST or DPDT switch like this:

Here's where I get my switches from:

Jameco switches

The nice thing about this is, you have normal humbucker with the switch in the middle, switch up gives you one coil, switch down gives the other. I got a great range of sounds this way, and the wiring is simple.

btw - In that drawing, violet = white.
