Fishman TriplePlay Wireless MIDI Pickup

Stratman

Guitaris Maximus
I love it and use it with Logic Pro to write songs without drummers, bass players, keyboard, horns, etc...

Hehehe
Easier to use than my Roland GR-33/pickup setup

BUT it is costly ($399)

Yeah they are meant to be the ****. I liked the graphtech setup so if its better than that it must be special.

Re: Fishman TriplePlay Wireless MIDI Pickup

Fishman stuff is expensive but well worth it. I have a Fishman PowerBridge in my Iceman, an OEM Fishman in the Parker and my Ibanez acoustic. I love their stuff. I am thinking about the new Fluence pickups for my next build.

Pretty sure the dude who designed the axon100 is responsible for that triple play. So it must be good because the axon was a great machine/

Re: Fishman TriplePlay Wireless MIDI Pickup

My big beef with it so far is that you have to spend an extra $100 or so to send the output to a harware synth via midi- you need a USB/midi converter. Why Fishman didn't release their own, I don't know. So to perform live, you would either need to bring a laptop or use the USB midi converter.
One thing hardware synths can do, that the FTP can't, is hold a patch with a sustain pedal and then change patches. Plus load times for complex softsynths are a few seconds vs being instantaneous with hardware synths. I like the idea of the FTP, though...but I am not sure I would want to drop $400 on one just for recording or transcribing.

Whn i owned the gk3 i use to love using the hold button. Is that what you're talking about? Holding notes then you can change patch and play over it?
So why cant the ftp do that?

Re: Fishman TriplePlay Wireless MIDI Pickup

The FTP can't really work this way. It loads a new patch, and while doing it, it wipes out the previous one. Also, the patch changes are not instantaneous. If this is wrong, please correct me, but the one I tried couldn't do it. You pick a sound and play it. Then you pick another one. It was really set up with recording and transcribing in mind- and possibly playing live with a set order of sounds. I don't work this way, so I don't yet think the FTP will work for me. I hope someday it will, but right now the live use is a little clumsy.

I have a good friend who is wanting to get one, He wants to do a power metal style band but using the fishman instead of a keyboard. I think it could be ok for that?

Like harpsichord style intros and fiddle etc small section i would imagine not entire songs.

I still like the graphtech setup despite its costs and installation.

Re: Fishman TriplePlay Wireless MIDI Pickup

Currently, I use an RMC pickup to 13 pin output into a Roland converter. For your friend, if he is recording with a DAW, the FTP is the most elegant, fastest solution. For live, there might be better choices depending on his current setup. He would have to either bring a laptop live or use a USB to midi converter to go to a hardware synth. He'd then need a foot controller to select patches, and send the output of the laptop (or synth) to the PA or a full range amp. Suddenly the $400 pickup gets a lot more expensive. I am constantly battling technology trying to get it all to work together for my needs, so I feel the pain.
