Five-Two for Strat Demo

Tone Fiend in Residence
Hey Stratophiles — anyone else tried an SD Five-Two for Strat? It's the one that has three a5 rod magnets on the bass side, and three a2s on the treble. I just posted a video demo over at tonefiend.com.

I'd experimented with an Alnico II Pro for Strat and liked it, but gravitated back to the ol' SSL-1, maybe because I play a lot in lowered tunings and in no-bass bands, and I wanted that punchier fundamental of an a5. But the hybrid approach is really working for me, and I don't hear any weird timbre shift when shifting between high and low registers.

Anyone have similar experiences?

Yes.

No glaringly obvious change in tone between plain and wrapped strings.

Sounds great. I've been really curious about 5-2 Tele pickups. Your videos are always a lot of fun.

By the way, the song you're playing sounds really like In a Heartbeat by John Murphy (the 28 Days Later theme tune).

EDIT: Nope, wait, it's East Hastings, by Godspeed You! Black Emperor, isn't it?

Always trust your first instinct! 28 Days Later it is! :)

Ahh, nice choice! That song rocks.

It's been a while since I've seen that movie and there's a lot of incorrect information out there about the soundtrack, but I believe East Hastings is also in it. It has a very, very similar riff (if not the same one) as the John Murphy composition. That's why I second guessed myself.
