FIVE WATTS, GARAGE, 11AM WEEKDAY: just got a knocking neighbour "TURN IT DOWN!!" o_O

Re: FIVE WATTS, GARAGE, 11AM WEEKDAY: just got a knocking neighbour "TURN IT DOWN!!"

A bunch of years ago, my band had set up for rehearsal in the other guitarist's garage. We were just launching into our first song when the guy next door comes over and tells us to stop playing because his newborn baby *might* wake up. We were in the process of telling the guy to hose off when the guitarist's wife came out and recognized the next door neighbor as someone she knew. Starts chatting him up, asking about the baby, etc. Then she made us pull the plug.

Truth is, it was the middle of the day, and the guy couldn't legally say "boo" about the noise. I'm also of the opinion that it is a mistake for new parents to try to create a perfectly quiet environment for babies to sleep in - just teaches them to wake up whenever that perfect silence is broken. But from a practical standpoint, we would have created problems with the neighbor if we ignored his request.

I blame neurotic parenting for the fact that our band never made it big.

I know people who have had noise complaints for playing unplugged acoustic guitars. :smack:

So do the walls and foundations!

Next time your neighbour uses a motor mower, ask them to turn their noise down.

Don't forget the *$((@@)0 leaf blowers.

What people said, in most towns in the Western world noise protection only kicks in during certain times of the day (there might be a mid-day blockout zone, too).

You could also try to dampen the garage door with a bed comforter or so. If you don't use it to park your car and you don't need the door that might work very well.

When my neighbor moved in, I told him I have band practices from time to time. I told him to just let himself in and tell us to stop. He mentioned it a year or two later, said he can barely hear us at all when we practice. And that is a full band. It helps I back up to the woods as well.

However, I limit practice to weekend days whenever possible. No practice on a weekday lasts past 8PM.

Or I could put a hundred dollar bill on top of that Valve Special... and turn into a ValveKing VK100. Since I already have one nice 300w cab, and even a 1x15" @150w extension. People really oughtta figure out how to appreciate 5w politely cranked to just 0.75 x 0.5 = 37.5% of the way up... as compared to, say, 100-150watters @ 100%.

J/k... sorta. Figure I'd get it to be able to play serious (elsewhere) if I wanna, and if people show up complaining about bedroom volumes, I'm like "hey this is the one I'm playing cuz I'm trying to be considerate - do ya really want me to start playing the one *I* wanna play right now instead?" *points at stack*

...cuz, seriously, I am about sick n tired of always listening to music off 7.7" ANDROID TABLET SPEAKERS (built-in), just cuz even stereos (forget Japanese-made component systems w/ 10" - 12" speakers and lots of em) and, yes, even LAPTOP SPEAKERS invariably "annoy" somebody. Yeah, well I'm annoyed when my wasted next house over neighbour goes outside for a smoke midafternoon and starts shouting into his cellphone (speakerphone, ya guessed it) about his freakin LINGERIE PREFERENCES ON THE MALE PARTNER - FOR BOTH CROSSDRESSING AND GAY SEX, AND WHICH HE LIKES BEST (ON HIMSELF!) FOR WHAT...

...come to think of it, maybe I *DO* need a change of heart about 5150s and Triple Recs in my near future after all. I'm soooo tired of listening to neighbour to the right DISCUSS oral and neighbour to the left PERFORM oral (aging exhibitionist, thinks she's a swinger lol) like they're 15 not 45ish, that I'm thinking the whole dang block needs some AURAL carpet bombing. %)))

11am on a weekday is fair game if you ask me. I'd never complain about noise at that time, however loud it was (unless of course it was at painful levels).

Only time noise matters is if it's at nighttime (late on weekends or after about 8-9 on weeknights), and if it's unreasonably loud.

I hate when I have neighbours who think that if they can hear anything then it's too loud. Er, you live in London. There are other people here. You may be able to hear them from time to time. I mean, for god's sake, we live in the same building and when it was built it was just one house. Don't like it, go live on a farm.

Oh yeah and the baby thing - we've got a son who's just turned a year, and loud rock music helps him sleep. We figured we might as well acclimatise him to it as he's going to be exposed to it a lot.

I agree with Jumble and GearJoneser, I would tell him if he doesn't have a warrant to go away. 11am is fair play, even if there is a noise ordinance, a 5 watt epi can't be louder than leaf blowers.

Rock On! :headbang:

I don't play loud enough to bother my neighbors but it's obviously loud enough to get somebody's dog barking like crazy. Apparently not all dogs like sloppy lead playing or, if I have traced the dog's rant to the proper back yard, he may prefer that I play guitar in Spanish. Either that or I need to add more delay.

I understand living in California. I'm here too. I live in a neighborhood with homeowners association, so I don't use my 5150, custom 100, or metalhead. Though I've had no complaints, I've noticed there are variations in 5 watt amps. Basically, not all amplifiers are made equal. I have a 78 Fender Champ with a Weber speaker in it and it sounds louder than my 60's Kalamazoo Reverb 12 with a Celestion Vintage 10 (UK Made). The Reverb 12 is supposedly 12 watts, but the Champ sounds louder and has a smaller speaker. Not to knock my Reverb 12, as it is a fantastic sounding amp, but it's more bassy and the Champ is brighter. When comparing my Champ to my friend's Epi Valve 5 watter, the Champ is still louder. It's just the circuitry of the 5 watter, kinds of tubes, etc.

my epiphone valve junior combo IS WAY TOO LOUD AT LESS THAN 1 ON VOLUME FOR ANY APARTMENT I HAVE LIVED IN!!!

neighbors freak at that.

I have the same 5 watt amp with the Mercury Magnetics upgrade kit and a mod that runs a 6V6 instead of the stock EL84. It can be pretty darn loud for 5 watts and an 8" speaker.

Five watts are loud enough to get you arrested or divorced.

I just had 2 half stacks, a 2x12, and a 1x12 combo all running at once. Loud enough to make my pants vibrate. You're neighbor would have died.
