I thought Flanging began with the Beatles when John leaned on a playback reel in the studio

"just phlange it" was a John Lennon thing, which HE attributed to the young, soon to be chief engineer at Abbey Road. Various folklore has been assigned to it, but the bottom line is that John seems to have liked the results when one half of a stereo vocal was played back a bit slower than the other...a lot of folks used to speed up or slow down reel to reel tracks, but it was a genius move to blend two different speeds. Bob Seger is a good example of speeded up stereo...approximately 1/3 to 1/2 pitch higher than standard; because his voice cut through the mix better when pitched a little higher than he actually sings...try playing along to the original recording of Old Time Rock And Roll; you will have to retune your guitar.
