Re: Floating tremolo tuning problem.. a solution
eh? I tried it.. works fine
Of course it
works...as in, the guitar still works. Nothing
bad will happen if you do that...but it does absolutely nothing that he claims it does, because the entire "physics" reasoning that he uses is simply dead wrong.
He should explain to us, with his obviously vast understanding of "physics," how with
fixed mounting points, and a
solid block to join the strings and the springs, one can do anything with the springs that allows control of the individual strings. But he can't, nor could anyone who actually does understand some physics/engineering, because it's impossible; the bridge is not made of rubber. The block being solid, combined with the fact that it and the bridge move in a set path (no variable "canting" of the bridge during vibrato use takes place), "averages" any difference in tension between the springs. The only thing spring adjustments affect is the
overall tension pulling against the strings, via the block. As long as the total tension that all of the springs together place on the block is the same, it doesn't matter whether the claw is squared up or at an angle to achieve that amount of tension; the effect on the strings will be the same.
In short, angling the claw can do nothing that a "standard" spring adjustment cannot. Am I saying not to angle the claw? Nope; it won't hurt anything. I'm just saying there is no particular reason to do so. All that can be taken from this video is that vibrato setup matters...not that his method actually does anything special.
Additionally, his statement that the lower strings are more tense than the higher strings exaggerates the facts and makes an issue out of something that is a non issue in practice. String tension in a factory packaged set is usually
fairly equal...and even if it wasn't, it wouldn't really cause any vibrato issues...and even if it did, his method would not cure them anyhow.
The guy obviously doesn't even hold an understanding of
basic ("obvious") mechanics. He just seems to have got some stoned surfer dude idea and run with it...and since he's an MI wanker, everyone listens to him and posts his bogus video. I'm sure he's a fine, technically proficient player who could play me under the table without even trying...but on the topic in the video, he simply doesn't know what the heck he's talking about.
