Floyd rose: 3 springs vs 5 springs

Re: Floyd rose: 3 springs vs 5 springs

well 4 is the best. that's all the info I have.

Re: Floyd rose: 3 springs vs 5 springs

I use 5 on my flying V, it doesn't go out of pitch when I bend away or pull up or push down (I have no bar, hahaha). When I pm it doesn't change pitch either, which is nice.

Re: Floyd rose: 3 springs vs 5 springs

I had to buy two more springs for my Jackson RR1. And I only use 10-46 strings! Anyhow, there is a bit more tension on the bridge, but I don't feel it comprimises my whammy comfort to much 'cause the replacement springs were soft and spring-y feeling. I think most of the time it's just outta necessity springs are used by players.

Re: Floyd rose: 3 springs vs 5 springs

If you don't want to add more springs you can always screw the 'claw' into the body more (screw in the screws) and it'll pull harder on the ones you have.

what differences do the number of springs make? is it all preference on feel?

It´s mostly preference, more springs = more tension = less responsive trem, slightly thicker sound.

but it´s also dictated by string guage and tuning... if you play 12s in standard such as I do for example, there´s no way you´re getting off with only 3 springs ;)

Re: Floyd rose: 3 springs vs 5 springs

I just use three (10-52s, full step down). I like the more responsive trem.

I can get away with 11-52s in standard and 3 springs and it feels better when using the trem, but any string gauge above that requires more springs to sit flush.

Re: Floyd rose: 3 springs vs 5 springs

I use two springs and 9s with a backstop, and for me it's the best possible setup. The backstop lets you do double-stop bends but the bar still has an easy feel and plenty of pull-up, plus the ability to fluter the trem is still present (though less wild than without the backstop).
