Floyd Rose Locking Nut Question (Zerb?)

How do I describe this problem? Well, here goes:

On my Jackson Dinky, the D and G strings buzz at the locking nut AFTER I lock them down (they do not buzz "unlocked"). To get around this, what I have done is to slip a very tiny piece of paper under the strings (between the string and the solid bar), and then I tighten the bolt down. This seems to work without affecting tone, but in time the paper dries out, separates, and then I'm back to going through that again.

My theory is that the bar is somehow grooved or something, since I've swapped the nuts around without affect. If it is grooved, I cannot feel or see it.

Have you run into this before? Should I just change-out the locking nut? And if so, is this a job for a pro? I see that the bar has a couple of wood screws holding it in, but is there some gluing, and or levelling involved?

Been living with it for a few years... but now I know a ton of guitar aces on this board, so it's time to fix this.

Thanks

-Matt

Re: Floyd Rose Locking Nut Question (Zerb?)

If the height of the locking nut is too low, simply shim it. Remove it from the neck, cut up a shim to size, stick it under the nut to raise it a hair. I've been using cut up beer cans to do that (of course, I drank the beer first!); I estimate they're around 0.1mm to 0.2mm, and should be just enough I reckon. If not, try 2 shims ;)

Y2stevo had a similar problem with his wolfie, i think theres some advice in that thread somewhere

Are you sure it's not coming from the trem springs? Sometimes that happens, and it'll drive you nuts. The quik fix for that is to find out which spring by removing the trem cover and placing a pick between the coils of each spring or putting slight pressure with your frett hand on the spring and play a open note until it goes away. Then just remove the spring and put a couple wraps of electrical tape around the spring and re-install.

Thanks El Whoppo. But, I checked that as well. The problem is solved once I "insulate" the strings at the nut using paper. I think I'm just going to have get off my butt buy a new locking nutt.

Thís is all very strange, between the 2 threads just about every possible cause has been listed.... :blackeye:

Well Zerb,

I'm either bummed cause there's no solution, or I'm thrilled to have finally stumped the master...

If I was to file the nut, what would I use?

"Blitz strip", axa dentist´s sandpaper. A small strip of paper lined with diamond dust. Your dentist uses them to clean uop after fillings ;)

But I will ponder what else this could be. Or even better, bring your axe with you when you come over and Dr. Zerb will make everything good again ;)
