Floyd Rose nut

I assume the reason the nut on a Floyd or any other double locking tremolo system is amde from steel is because of the force it takes to keep the strings in place. Which I guess means its also quite durable. So why aren't steel nuts offered on normal electrics? Obv the materials being used (Tusq, bone, brass, graphite etc) all provide variations in tone that are preferable by some, but I don't hear too many guys complaining about the Floyd nut messing with their tone.

Re: Floyd Rose nut

I like the tone of the Floyd nut better with the pressure pads off; I think the clamping makes open strings (especially) sound small. On the other hand, if I want to go nuts with the trem, I put them back on.

I think materials for conventional nuts have to be easy to work. They're going to be shaped, slotted, polished, reworked… all by hand in many cases.

Member Wolf5150 had a stainless steel nut made for a guitar not too long ago - the guy who made it is also a member here.

Re: Floyd Rose nut

Probably cause they're harder to machine. There's brass nuts out there and many are reluctant to use them since they're harder to work with than bone, plastic or graphite
