Floyd Rose string breaks

Recently I've been jamming my FR-equipped axes and everything's been great EXCEPT the wound strings, in particular, have been breaking at the saddle. I'm guessing it's friction that's causing this, otherwise everything's fine.

What has been the most effective way for you all to save your strings? Lubes/saddle inserts/etc...?

The most effective way is to correctly set up the floyd rose! Watch a youtube video of how to do it (if you haven't done it) or have the guitar shop do it for you!!

Swap it out for a Schaller 3801 that has roller saddles. Stays in tune better than a Floyd with a bone nut on my San Dimas build :headbang:

...I am a huge fan of the Schaller 3801 after replacing the Floyd on a Walnut San Dimas.

BUT, for your problem I do not know as I've not had that issue with the Floyds I've used. You say axes so I assume you are having the same problem on multiple guitars?...is that a correct assumption?

It is always a good idea to lube when metal is on metal, so perhaps try that. Also, is it the same string breaking? Perhaps a saddle needs to be replaced... Are you picking right at the saddles?

Re: Floyd Rose string breaks

Could be sharp edges worn into the saddles. Could be worn string locking blocks. Over-tightening will eventually take its toll.

Re: Floyd Rose string breaks

I just had the same problem on my guitar. I tend to not mess with Floyds, so I brought it to a tech and he polished up the saddles and no more breakage. It's an old Floyd, so eventually the saddles will have to be replaced. How old are yours?

Exactly what I was going to say.

FYI, if you replace the saddles, Original series and 1000 series saddles are the same but Special series saddles are made of zinc alloy. Not bad, but different.
