Flying V humbuckers

on the march

New member
Hello,

I just purchased an Epiphone Gothic Flying V and want to replace the stock humbuckers. what pickups would be recommended for playing old Accept tunes? those old Accept albums had righteous guitar tones.

my amp is a Peavey Supreme XL head (set for British and Tight) into an Avatar G212H cab loaded with Eminence Man-o-War speakers.

Thanks

You could try a Duncan Distortion or a Custom, Dimarzio Super Distortion is in the running as well.

Re: Flying V humbuckers

I'm not familiar with the tones you are looking for, but I did A Duncan Distortion and it was great.

Distortion. I just put one in my V. I know the wood and bridge are totally different, it's a great p/u for rhythm and leads.

thanks for the replies!

I've been watching some old Accept videos on Youtube.com and keep seeing Wolf play a Strat that's got a black humbucker in the bridge. anyone know what this pickup was? in the videos for "Slaves of Metal" and "Metal Heart (Live)" his rhythm and lead tone is soooo badass.

cheers :beerchug:

I was just playing this stuff last night, so it's current in my head.

The rig I was using is a 1988 Marshall Micro Stack Silver Jubilee. I have a DSL100 1/2 stack but I think the solid state distortion helps nail the tone. Use pedals from that era (Boss SD-1/DS-1) if you have a tube amp.

He's using EMG's on anything newer than Restless and Wild.

For Restless and Wild, I nail the tone with a JB loaded guitar. For the newer stuff, my Duncan Distortion loaded 750XL (same build as an LP) was too thick, but my EMG85n/81b loaded Jackson Kelly Star nailed the later tone (Balls to the Wall). I have a mid boost on the Kelly, but turning it on hurt trying to match the tone. Just the EMG81 all by itself sounded the most like Wolf.

Do a search on HCGF. There was a decent thread about Accepts tone.

edit: If you have a thinner toned axe (floyded bolt on) the DD might work well. My 750XL is a fixed bridge/mahogany body, and it just thumps the low end, not bright enough on the high end. But I see you have a mahogany V with a fixed bridge, so your results would be like mine.

My vote would be be a SH-5 custom for Balls to the Wall /Fast as a Shark type tones.

He recorded with a V but used his strats live as I understood it.

What is it with German metal guys and pointy axes? :laugh2:

LOL! I think you have it backwards - they bring out the V's for the show.
