Flying V upgrades...

I have a Sky Flying V, that I do't really use much. (My wife says its her guitar but she never picks it up) I am thinking about doing some modifications to it including a pick up swap. How do you think a Invader in the bridge and a Dimebucker in the neck will sound?

DO NOT put a Dimebucker at the neck spot!! It is a powerful pickup and balancing with the bridge pickup will become extremely hard if not impossible. On top of that the Dimbucker was designed as a bridge pickup, I really don't recommend using it in the neck position (you could put other pickups that were designed for the bridge spot in the neck spot, but not the Dimebucker).
If you like the sound of the Invader (I don't like it too much myself) you can go ahead and put it in the bridge spot, but I would certainly put something else than the Dimebucker in the neck spot. By the way: what tones are you after? What music do you play the most? Thanks in advance for answering those questions, it will make it easier to recommend pickups for your Flying V.;)

I mostly play rock/metal. The main thing I am going for with this guitar is a harder/crunchier distorted sound. Me and a group of friends have a project we are working on that will require metal/rock with the ability to do some tones closer to a rap melody.

^^^ that right there,
or the distortion set, depending more on how you'll be using the neck.

Either bridge makes me happy in about any guitar, but without knowing all the details I'd say custom/59n.
Custom/59n is better at covering a wider range of styles.

If anything I would try an Invader neck model in the neck and the Dimebucker in the bridge.

Re: Flying V upgrades...

dimebucker on the bridge and a pearly gates + or pearly gates neck with an a5 on the neck slot, the dimebucker can perfectly complement a flying v and give you from twang to thumping chuggin death and thrash (no joke, way far from 1 trick pony pickup)

Re: Flying V upgrades...

You could run the dime in the neck as a split-only.
That would put it's output at a much more compatible level and also maybe a better clearer tone for the neck-slot.
Would be a bit loony to buy one new for such use, but if one was wanting to use what they already had or was swapping for one,,,,maybe.

Re: Flying V upgrades...

Yea you could go with Dimebuckers in both positions, but lower the neck and run it in parallel.
I did something similar by using L500XL's in both positions and it should apply very well to your application too.

*edit;
Tell your wife finders keepers....

Re: Flying V upgrades...

Thanks for all the suggestions guys! Hopefully I'll be able to use them soon. As of right now i'm just planning so I can save up for these.

What other details would you like to know?

EDIT: Iv'e tried. It was the first guitar I bought. As soon as I got my schecter she said that it was hers. She wants me to try and teach her to play but the V is not in full working order right now.
