Footswitch for plugins? Using plugins live.

I am currently a bedroom-studio only player.

As such, I have trouble using a conventional amplifier because the good ones (tubes) are just too loud and my neighbours will complain. Furthermore, they are a pain to record should I want to.

So currently I use modelling. I'm using a Line6 X3 Live at the moment but would like to upgrade. There are some amazing software amplifiers these days available as plugins, and Line6 is about to release their Helix product as a plugin (if Fractal did one, I'd buy that). So I'm thinking of going down that route because plugins are cheaper than hardware.

However, what I really like about my current setup is that I have a floorboard that I use to change patches or activate effects whilst I'm jamming. I know that if I was using a plugin I could just manually switch patches on the computer or set a midi control on a track, but I want to be able to just change on the fly as I'm jamming along to a song. I also want to be able to use the wah/volume pedal stuff too.

So to those who use plugins, do you have a means to control things via a floorboard? How would I do this?

Cheers!

The best thing about plug-ins is having everything in one convenient computer interface.

Need a floor MIDI controller.

Not an expert on guitar-midi, but have hooked up lots of midi in my studio - this is the solution that immediately came to my mind. You'd have to program controls, etc. but once done, you'd be good to go.
