Re: FOR SALE: various pickups and stuff....
Although Gibson in their product pages uses the 1 and 2 designations on the AlNiCo II Burstbuckers and not on the AlNiCo V Burstbucker Pros, I've seen some for sale on ebay that had writing (sticker?) on the bottom which said AlNiCo V and had the 1 or 2 designations as well.
I got some interesting info about Burstbuckers via a telephone discussion with Gibson customer service. They confirmed what I could already see just by searching through the specs on various guitars, about the A5 Pros in some models and the A2 non-Pros in others. But in addition to that, they said this....
The A2 BBs being installed in guitars from the factory are now wax potted due to complaints they were too microphonic. Earlier factory installed ones (he didn't give a date), and all the ones sold as accessories, are not wax potted.
I like my Duncan Antiquity '55 Tele pickups with the baseplates that aren't wax potted, and I like my Classic Series Tele pickups I've added baseplates to without wax potting them. I bought an A2 Burstbucker off ebay that was a pull from a very recent LP, so I have a wax potted one (on the way actually). I'm looking for one that isn't wax potted.
I A/B'ed two LPs in a GC, one with the A2 BBs and one with the A5 BB Pros. I liked the sound of the A2 BBs better, especially the lower wound #1 in the neck position.
One thing the Gibson rep wouldn't provide is the DC resistance of these pickups. If you have an ohmeter handy, could you measure yours for grins?
Thanks!
