I believe the soloist/dinky shape is the super strat. Thinner longer horns - 24 frets. S/S/H or H/H. Correct if i'm wrong.

i think super strats are strats with non-traditional parts(switches, pickup, trem, etc.)
the MIM fender deluxe super strat come with 3 singlecoils.Xeromus said:

I think of like a soloist and usally two humbucker and maybe a single coil in the mid.

But superstrat and strat are radically different body shapes...
Superstrats are thinner with thinner longer horns.

I've always considered a Superstrat a hot-rodded strat, i.e a strat with a floyd, humbuckers and scalloped neck

Kramer and Jackson/Charvels..... plus others all made the Super Strat's of the 80's..... Eddie started it.... Was not long after VH became huge in the early 80's every player was running to shops to get their now vintage strats cut up to add Floyds and Humbuckers to....... I see the odd Vintage Fender Strat out there that someone has tried to glue back in some wood were a Floyd once was sitting..... I used to see Strat necks that had floyds added to them and the radius of the top of the frets was flattened out but the neck wood radius was still stock.... looked and played funny.....
I would pretty much say any strat shape from any company that has humbuckers is a super strat... Floyd bridges help as well... Customized strats are great

A superstrat is a "spongy" term nowadays, but originally it was used to mean hot rodded Strats (Charvels, EVH´s "Frankenstein" and similar guitars).
The only REAL defining characteristic Nowadays seems to be the bridge Humbucker, this is definitely essential. Other Pickups are generally not "necessary" for the title, but H-S, H-S-S, H-H-, H-S-H, H-H-S., et.al. also qualify as superstrats.
IMO a Floyd Rose or V-trrem is also essential, but many consider hardtails as superstrats as well.
I personally don´t consider downsized bodies (Jackson Soloist/ Dinky, Ibanez RG/ S....) to be superstrats, because for me it´s not a Strat, period. But here as well, others do....
But I think that´s about as precise as it gets....
