This little 9-volt wonder is a killer little amp. The speaker it has is so rich sounding (though it still sounds like a small speaker) that it takes the fairly tubey but bright tone of the amp and smooths it out nicely. Makes for a great little bedroom or hotel room jammer. I've been playing guitar in my hotel room all night while I post. This is one heck of a practice rig. It has four settings (clean, hot tube, OD, High Gain). I tend to use the hot tube and high gain settings the most. High gain gets you all the grind settings you will ever need via adjusting the volume of the guitar itself. It's warm and tubey even though it has no tubes and has a nice throaty midrange. Pulls pinch harmonics nicely and lets them ring out nicely. The hot tube setting is like a warm cleaner tone that is barely on the edge of breaking up. Nice for bluesy work. Very rich little amp that loves humbuckers and single coils alike. The price was a little higher than some amps in the same class, but I think it's tone is superior. It also has a bubinga cab (yes, real wood) that matches my cherry Edana nicely and a steel chassis just like a regular sized amp. Check them out next time you see one. Neat little travel amp and perfect for hotel work. Bring a holy grail pedal with you and two cables to plug everything in along with a single 9v battery and entertain yourself all evening long. You don't have to have the holy grail pedal, but it sure makes things nicer. The OD is basically a brighter and more snarly version of the hot tube setting with similar gain. I'll probably mod that setting if possible for a different tonal character. Clean is sparkling clean, but a little thin sounding to my ears just like the OD sounds bright and thinner. The high gain setting can be flubby at max guitar volume (I always turn the guitar volume down a smidge when using that setting). I'm gonna see if it's guts can take some nicer diodes etc to smooth out the clipping even more and maybe change the tone stacks on the OD setting to something more pleasant. Right now it sounds really good though and I'm content with the value of the amp. It's slightly taller/thicker than a coke can and about 7" wide. Fits right in my travel bag with my clothes etc. My shaving kit is about the same size.
This little beasty has a built in hands free tuner that works very well. It's very sensitive and very accurate to my ears.
It also has three knobs. Volume (very effective that takes it from 5 watts of volume down to whisper levels), mode (clean, hot tube, OD and High gain), and expander. The expander knob is a mid boost all else cut when turning it down and a highs/bass boost and mid cut when turning it up. Works very well for shaping the tone. I tend to run mine at 3 o'clock or so for a bit of a bigh and bass boost to make up for the speaker's small size and it's somewhat dark nature. Sounds expansive enough to me.
