Found another satin Gibson

I've got a little collection started of satin Gibson's. I currently have 5 satin models and a lone gloss. I'm not buying anymore gloss Gibson's. So I'm trying to find different used models that are satin. I found a Les Paul special tribute P90 guitar in walnut! Gibson quit making these a year ago and people are wanting more than they cost new so I've been watching the market and finally found one for a decent price. Walnut is actually the color I wanted, for some reason it has always been the rarest color for this model so I've been looking for a decent one for a while. Just ordered from guitar center in Beaverton Oregon. Will update when it arrives. So far in the satin collection I've got a Les Paul standard faded 50's, Les Paul tribute, Les Paul special tribute (humbucker), Les Paul special tribute (p90), Les Paul junior DC tribute bass. And a lone gloss SG standard. I'm also going to get one of the 60's faded's even know it's not my favorite neck shape (it's not bad) Next I'm trying to find one of those Les Paul special DC tribute models they came out with in 2019. They were 800 new and people want 1000+ for them so I'm waiting till I can find a decent price.

I have to say, I love satin finishes more than gloss. If my Gibson was available in satin, I would have opted for that. I do have a few satin instruments, including my #1 Warmoth.

That's what sucks is Gibson usually does the satin finishes on their student instruments. That's not a bad thing but I wish they would do more 'premium' models in satin, like adding more models and finishes to the faded line. It's just something about the satin finish that is more 'familiar' to my hands and feel a little faster on the neck. I hate when I first start playing a gloss neck and it's kinda sticky feeling... Major turnoff.

I find them sticky, too. Maybe it is just my skin? Gibson never took the satin thing seriously. I think it is because burst finishes, which they are known for, look best under gloss.

I have a Gibson Les Paul Tribute that I absolutely love.

I don't think the finish is particularly good-looking. It looks pretty rustic, IMO, but the tone, man. There's hardly any finish at all stopping the guitar from vibrating freely.

The neck is starting to gloss up from playing, but I've never had a problem with it feeling sticky, even if it's nitro. I've never had a problem with any neck feeling sticky, TBH. I don't prefer satin necks, personally, as even the nicer ones tend to gloss up over time.

They do have the new-ish Standard Fadeds that, while they're not as expensive as a glossy Standard, are more pricy than the glossy Studios.

I just got one of the 50's faded's. It's nice. I'm going to get one of the 60's just to complete the collection. The faded standard I have looks, feels and plays awesome!

My only Gibson is a satin model. 2018 Player Plus. I love the look and feel of the satin finish, but the neck has been worked to a slightly glossy finish as I've played it.

I’ve been eyeballing those, how do you like it, and is it full weight?

^That's one cool looking LP! What other colors did those come in?

Thanks,

Colors were Wine Red, Sunburst, and Ocean Blue. Originally they had uncovered burstbuckers, but the PO changed mine to Dimarzio 36th anniversary PAF Pro's. Not pickups that I would have picked on my own, but they really are killer pickups and are very versatile.

I like satin necks. I've found that if you take a little high grit sandpaper, it's really easy to rough up a gloss neck so that it feels satin.

Satin bodies though I've never warmed up to . . . especially with a transparent ones they invariably would look better and show off the wood under the finish nicer with gloss. I've actually polished several guitar bodies up to a high gloss from a satin finish just using Meguire's ultimate polish and some elbow grease and they always look great after doing this. And satin bodies (at least for me) end up wearing down so that plenty of areas are glossy (around the knobs and switch, where your right arm rests and where the guitar rubs against your body on the back) after 5-10 years of use anyway. Then they just look kinda weird.

YMMV though. I know that there are many who like the satin look.

The 50's faded standard is awesome. It's full weight but they vary from 8-10 lbs. Though. The hughes vary, some will be lighter and some will be darker. If your going to get one I suggest you hand select the top and don't play the wood lottery as there are a lot of tops that are duds.
