Re: fralin unbucker - lew?

I've tried a couple of versions of Lindy's Unbuckers and helped him out by giving him feedback on the various design changes.

He makes them two ways: rather than winding both coils differantly, as he does in the original uncovered black or zebra Unbucker design, the nickel cover Unbucker pickup design has the slug polepieces buried more deeply into the coil under the wound strings only.

To me, the Unbucker has a more open midrange and clearer, twangier tone than Lindy's stock humbucker. It is twangier and you can really hear the windings on the wound strings.

Alot of guys swear by them.

Personally, I prefer his regular humbuckers with a 7.5K to 9.5K wind. My favorite neck Fralin humbucker is the 7.5K and my favorite bridge Fralin in the 9.5K. They're bright and clear but still very ballsy and complex...ballsier than the Unbuckers.

I have Duncans in most of my guitars but I love the Fralins.

thanks for the low down lew! was looking at a few pups for my ibanez sz320bk. and the options are aplenty. am looking for versatility to cover pop to metal.

was actually considering:

cc/aph2
dc/jazz
59/pg, phat cat or ?

maybe you can help?

thanks!

Well....the Duncan pickups I like best are all listed in my gear list in my signature. All but the Antiquitys which I don't have a guitar to put in at the moment.

I like the PG neck & 59B alot.

Also the Seth Lover neck & Custom Custom alot.

I'd think the A2Pro neck & Custom Custom would be sort of similar to the Seth/CC combo...but I haven't tried that.

I have Fralins on my Les Paul standards, one set of unbuckers and one set of humbuckers. Both have 8.5K bridge and 7.5K neck values. I prefer the unbucker and have gone from one guitar to the other to see if its the instrument itself.....its the pickup that i prefer. Very complex, very musical. I think its the best pickup you can buy today.

My Brian Moore has Fralin humbuckers 9K bridge and a 7.5 K neck. Fantastic sounding, and they work well split.

I cannot recommend these pickups highly enough.

That's great! Thanks for the post. What do you like better about the Unbuckers compared to Lindy's standard humbuckers? Sounds like your tastes are similar to mine as the set I like best also uses the 7.5K neck and either 9k bridge or 9.5K bridge. I kind of favor the 9.5K bridge.

I used that set in my '95 Hamer Studio for quite a while.
