FRED with A2 in the Bridge? Who's tried it and what were your impressions?
I posted a little on this in another thread. I've done it and swapped it back. The stock mag is a short A5. I now have the Fred covered with a solid (no hole) cover. I did the mag swap before I ever covered the pickup. This is going back a little while in memory but I felt that the A2 damped the harmonics somewhat. There was a little bit of that rounding that the A2 provides, but at the cost of some harmonics. I'm a sloppy player, especially now. The side benefit of that is some cool "natural" harmonics from the Fred. Nothing I was trying for. They were subtle, but present and I felt some of that was missing with the A2 mag. I was worried about that when I covered the pickup, but the cover didn't seem to affect it much if any at all. My guess is that the weaker A2 was responsible but maybe it was the change in EQ as well. YMMV so I still think it's worth a try. You can always swap back. Personally, I usually end up with an A2 in the bridge. Harmonics aside, I probably preferred the overall tone of the Fred with an A2.
I put UOA5's in my Fred's. Stock A5 is pretty bright. The coils on Fred's are quite mismatched in resistance, so you get some extra high end from that.
Blueman ... what do you think accounted for loss of some of the harmonics I experienced with the A2. Weaker mag or change in eq? I'm thinking maybe a bit of both. I might try a UOA5 seeing that I have a couple of them now.
