Of course there's a catch.
It's broken. I replaced a capacitor inside years ago to try to get a little more lush sound from it, and in the process I pulled a trace from the board. Someone with a reasonable level of soldering talent could probably fix it, but my soldering talent isn't that good, and my eyes certainly aren't that good anymore.
