Re: Frenzel 5e3 Deluxe Plus

My buddy has one and the quality is actually top notch and the tone is even better. He's currently running KT88's in it so it's got a ton of headroom and it's bloody LOUD.

Re: Frenzel 5e3 Deluxe Plus

Thanks JumpMarine. He wouldn't have any clips would he?
No problem. He doesn't have any clips but I will ask him to put some together when he gets back next week from FL.

BTW, those clips on the Frenzel site are quite accurate. My buddy has tried just about everything in that amp so far for power tubes(6v6, 6l6, EL34, KT88 and EL84's with yellow jackets) It sound good with all, but really shines with 6l6's and KT 88's. He's been running it into a 2x12 loaded with V30/Texas Heat and that combo works quite well for both the Fender and Marshall channels.

I have a Frenzel 5F6 amp. I really like this thing. It looks like some 8th grade science project since it doesn't have any enclosure, but the sound is unbelievable.

Re: Frenzel 5e3 Deluxe Plus

If I get one, I'll build a head cab for it.

JumpMarine, I just saw an Iron Sounds on eBay and listened to the clips - which sounded fantastic. Now I'm maybe interested in one of those.

Would you mind giving a little review of yours?

Thanks.

It's a great amp that gets you right in the JTM45/Plexi vibe without the crazy volume. It is loud and will keep up quite nicely with an unmiked drummer. The clips that Jersey Aaron posts on the website are quite accurate with what I hear with mine. Here's a short clip of the one I built: Normal Channel(Vol/Tone only): This is with a strat and gets a boost mid way with an OCD set to zero gain and max volume only https://forum.seymourduncan.com/showthread.php?t=88942&highlight=ocd+boost

It really gets wicked with humbuckers and p90's!

The specs on the amp:
2 EL84, 3 12ax7
18 Watts
2 Channel, Normal(Vol/Tone) TMB(Full Tone Stack, 2 Vol for cascading gain stage)Channels are bridgeable and sound great.
Negative Feedback switch
Line Out
Multi Tap Ohm speaker out(4/8/16)
Can be set up with either tube or SS Rectifier depending on what transformer you have. If it's the Heyborer/Ironsounds then it's SS only and it sounds great.
Footswitchable Preamp Gain Boost, haven't used this much to give you a good review.

It is very sensitive and really cleans up nicely with just the guitars volume. Takes to pedals very well and is extreely quiet even when dimed. Some improvements that I need to make to the amp: Remote the rectifier diodes off of the board due to excess heat from a 5 watt resistor close by and add a vol control to the line out. Other than that, GREAT amp!

Thanks for the review JumpMarine, I lost track of this thread.

I decided to go with a Frenzel and just ordered one... will take 4-5 weeks to build.

I'll post a review and clips when I get.

The next-next amp is going to have to be a 18watt marshall clone.

Re: Frenzel 5e3 Deluxe Plus

If the 5E3 you were looking at has the right OT, it can handle 6L6 tubes and give you that oomph you're looking for.

Re: Frenzel 5e3 Deluxe Plus

It seems priced right at 475. Is that for the chassis only or is there a speaker and cab that come with it?

Re: Frenzel 5e3 Deluxe Plus

It's for the chassis+tubes. I'm going to have a friend build me a head cab, and I'm still deciding on a speaker cab; likley to be an Avatar 112. His site says $475, but you can get it for $425 from him through EBay.

I also got the bias switch - go from fixed to cathode biased, and the different OT with switch for different ohm speaker configurations.

I don't know how, but this amp can take any octal (SP?) based power tube.

Re: Frenzel 5e3 Deluxe Plus

My buddy is running his through an Avatar 2x12(Vintage 30/Texas Heat) open back, it sounds huge. He also sent it back into Jim to have the larger multi tap OT added, it's worth it.

Re: Frenzel 5e3 Deluxe Plus

Alright, Frenzel 5e3 Deluxe Plus is scheduled to be delivered to my house on Friday!

I scored a new Avatar 1x12 with G12H on Ebay to go with it.

I'll post clips if anyone is interested.
