Fretboard oil?

Is one better than another? I'm going to change strings tomorrow, and I figure I'll pick some up before I do it, but I'd like to know exactly what I'm doing first.

Sperm oil? ..

..get your head out of the gutter..I mean sperm whale oil. Very rare and expensive.

Re: Fretboard oil?

I use WD-40.

....but I have graphite necks.

Used to use the dunlop kind and it worked quite well.

Re: Fretboard oil?

I use old english lemon oil to clean fretboards. Never had a problem, but some people claim it actually dries out your fretboard. Never seen that happen and I oiled my epiphone's fretboard fairly liberally every 4 or 5 months (dry climate), and never had any problems. it's cheap stuff, too. I've had the same bottle for 2 years and have barely used an eighth of it.

+1 on Lemon Oil!!!

Re: Fretboard oil?

I use Orange Oil. Works great and I swear it looks like it gives the maple wood neck an amber tint.

Re: Fretboard oil?

I use the Dunlop cleaner prep and oil conditioner. Been using it for several years and it works easily and well. In the future I may look for something else, but it's worked for me all these years nonetheless. :)

Dr. Stringfellows is awesome stuff!

Re: Fretboard oil?

I've actually used extra virgin olive oil on my strat's rosewood fretboard...rubbed in with my finger.

It actually felt nicer to play on, and didn't dry out my board as much as lemon oil did.

Re: Fretboard oil?

IMHO, nothing beats unboiled linseed oil. I've used this stuff for years and it always works great.

It's what Dan earliwine recommends too (if that holds any value to anyone here)...

Re: Fretboard oil?

Been using mineral oil from the local drugstore on my ebony boards for as long as I can remember.

Re: Fretboard oil?

I went ahead and just oiled down the fretboard with Old English Lemon Oil. I had a big bottle of it with the Windex and 409, so I just used that. It should be good enough based on all the recommendations here.

By the way, I Googled up using olive oil on the fretboard, and some folks had some not very nice things to say about it. The one that scared me away from doing it was the guy who said it would eventually make your fretboard rancid. That doesn't sound fun at all.

Yeah, that works great too. Funny how a gallon of either mineral oil or linseed oil costs so little and yet some folks swear by the pricey little bottles with fancy labels and brands.

I'm not saying they don't work, I just think that they're overhyped but hey, that only my very humble opinion...

Re: Fretboard oil?

Try Fret Dr. once and you won't say that anymore. IMO $13 for a bottle that lasts you 3 years isn't expensive. I have tried all these other things and they simply don't work as well. They will dry out again in a week. I did this neck last week.

Whatever works for you bro.

I oil my fretboards twice a year and they never felt dry in between...
