Re: Fretlight: the guitar tab is on the guitar fretboard. the future of learning?

Uh-oh. It's the Eighties again.

Re: Fretlight: the guitar tab is on the guitar fretboard. the future of learning?

Ohhh, so that's why those guitars are quite expensive! I completely missed that hahaha. I saw them a few days ago on the Sweetwater guitar gallery and was somewhat confused by the price, "Chinese Fender knock-offs for 600 bucks?! WTF!?!".

It may be cool for beginners. Although I can see it creating bad habits like hunching over the guitar to see the fretboard all the time.

I think it's cheaper and the same thing to get that GuitarPro software and see the same thing on the onscreen fretboard.

Here are the guitars:
This one looks nice.

What the hell? This one is over a grand and has a plywood neck! :lmao:

Fretlight is just one approach to learning. It will suit some and not others.

IMO, there is something a little "karaoke" about this system. On the other hand, I would be more than happy to acquire a $600 Fretlight Chapman Stick. :D

Re: Fretlight: the guitar tab is on the guitar fretboard. the future of learning?

Hahaha, it'll be like an xmas tree on a chapman stick fretboard! First time I saw a Chapman stick was on a Liquid Tension Experiment video, being played by Tony Levin. I was soo confused with all that 2-handed tapping all over what looked like a dozen strings.

Re: Fretlight: the guitar tab is on the guitar fretboard. the future of learning?

The first time I read about it was in 1987-88. Almost 20 years later it hasn't taken off yet. So, no it's not the future of learning.

Re: Fretlight: the guitar tab is on the guitar fretboard. the future of learning?

I wanted one of these SO bad when I was a kid. 20+ years later I still don't know my modes.

Coincidence?

Re: Fretlight: the guitar tab is on the guitar fretboard. the future of learning?

I can't help, but think that this would be an invaluable tool for learning modes. Set a key, look at the fretboard at a distance to get a feel for the accompanying notes and you can play along to the LEDs until it starts to stick instinctively.

Re: Fretlight: the guitar tab is on the guitar fretboard. the future of learning?

I think it could be useful for helping someone learn songs. Some folks struggle translating what they see someone else's hand to to the motions for the own hand. Fretlight would allow someone to pick that up without the translation.

Re: Fretlight: the guitar tab is on the guitar fretboard. the future of learning?

I don't use tab.

cool insights, I did not know this stuff has been around since the 80s? I have never been into covers since 15 years ago when I started playing, but this device looks really inspiring, I see a couple satisfied users:

this company's iteration of this idea does not seem to be more than 2 years old?

clearly this invention has had the opportunity of at least a year to take off but has not gotten much attention

lol I see there was older companies with models, I could imagine users like maybe jerryJG getting a kick out of one of these :lmao::headbang:

Cant play an instrument with your eyes. Better to learn to play by feel so you can have your eyes on the music if you are reading it -actually reducing how long it takes to learn tunes, the chord chart if you a following it, the audience if you are trying to connect with them, or the nice rack in the front row. You'd miss all that if you trained yourself with fretlight.

Re: Fretlight: the guitar tab is on the guitar fretboard. the future of learning?

I figure in a couple years I will buy this or a derivative of it to learn new stuff and supplement my current abilities...satisfied with just original stuff as of nowz tho...

Do any of your guitars have fret markers?

Re: Fretlight: the guitar tab is on the guitar fretboard. the future of learning?

It's a neat idea, but as others have said, it's been around a long time and has never really caught on. I know I saw it in guitar magazines as early as 1991 or so. I see how it could really work out well for someone, but that someone has never been me.

I've always been a multiple guitar person; what happens when I want to learn something on a different guitar? Either I retrofit the guitar, wait until I've memorized the parts before moving over to the other instrument, or use more conventional learning methods -- back to square one.

Re: Fretlight: the guitar tab is on the guitar fretboard. the future of learning?

I remember coming up with the idea when I was a Junior in high school. A few years later I open up the latest Guitar Player and whao looky here! :banghead:
