Full shred 8, JB8, C8 & double thick ceramics

1. lately ive really been into higher gain pickups and putting A8 mags in them,
last one im interested in trying is the Full Shred. never played one, and ive read about 20 pages of forums and most say "its has great articulation, not alot of low end, better for leads and its not extremely hot but just right were it can clean up, not as great for heavy rhythms."
would you all agree with this general census?
i know opeth uses the full shred for rhythm, its heavy but you can tell its not overly thumpy bass which has its purpose but not for the stuff opeth sounds like.
if i throw a A8 mag in there do you think it will be overly hairy or sizzly? the closest thing probably in my assumption would be a JB8, but what i dont like about the JB8 is its relationship with my amp which is a DSL100, its a little bright and really accentuates the upper mids, so the JB8 just screams with it a little too much.
i seen the Full Shred is 4/4/8 which means to me the mids are tamed and probably going to be alot smoother on this amp. i love how this amp thumps with the bass and if the FS8 is right it could be my holy grail tone for this setup. cause honestly i havent found it quite yet. C8 is good but kinda has a hairy feel to the low strings though downright amazing lead tone the best ive ever heard maybe, the palm mutes compress alot and it doesnt pump bass like the JB8 does, so maybe the FS or FS8 may be it for me. my playing is balanced, i play heavy rhythms then fly on up and shred leads. i dont think i could ever live without the bass that an A8 mag creates...

2. another thing do they sell double thick magnets? or do you have to steal one out of a pickup that comes with one?
and
3. if your pickup isnt designed for a double thick mag will the pickup not clamp down right again? like too big of a mag for it?
4. would you guys say a stock JB is brighter than a stock Full shred or vice versa? dont need extra bright, amp does that already.

i know the only way ill ever know is if i buy it and play it on my rig but alot of the time what so many people say cant be wrong.
"when so many people are telling you the same things it stupid not to listen to them" i believe in the mass knowledge on this forum.

Full Shred 8 is a flamethrower...best way to describe it. Still atriculate...still full of FS goodness. Gains low-mids and bottom like any A8 PuP does. Gains output. I found it to lose some feel...kinda like how an EMG 81 always responds no matter how hard or soft you pick.

I ran it for a while...but the A8 mag just grates on my ears after a while.

My $.02

As far as the spacer thing is concerned, I suggest you take apart a pickup you've got and see if the spacer is square. If so, you'll need a new one. If not, you should be able to rotate it 90 degrees and accomodate one of those giant magnets.

thats cool thanks for your reply.
would you say the stock full shred is brighter than a JB.

i like the stock JBs clarity more than the JB8, but i like the JB8's bass response.
and yeah i get what your saying about grating your ears after a while, JB8 is near that point. have to turn back gains and highs to make it work.

Re: Full shred 8, JB8, C8 & double thick ceramics

I have a JBJ and FSJ in the bridges of my Medley and Pacer and love the crap out of the full shred. The lows and mids on the FS are more balanced and doesn't have as big of a bassy thump. Highs on both scream. While the JBJ is a little hotter and breaks up a little more, my FS takes higher levels of gain much better, seems to be more articulate (at least to my ears), and screams 80's all day long.

Re: Full shred 8, JB8, C8 & double thick ceramics

I think the reason the A8 is tough on the ears is because the signal is less dynamic. I've found that the volume level stays pretty consistent no matter how hard or soft I pick. So in my opinion it gives a more compressed tone than a A5 or A2. This makes it ideal, IMO for modern and heavy styles of music, where the guitar volume is very consistent.

I found that when I tried a C5 and then a C8, the C8 couldn't really nail that AC/DC kind of tone as well as the C5. It's like it took away whatever it is that makes me recognize that kind of sound. It think it's dynamics.

I've never played a FS8 but as far as the census thing goes, I think the FS5 works great for rhythm applications if you're going for a fast, crunchy, and tight rhythm. It has a pretty fast attack, couple that with the fact that you don't have too much bass, and I think it makes it a great pickup for those tight rhythm parts.

Re: Full shred 8, JB8, C8 & double thick ceramics

I sold an FS8 to "fowl2338" very recently. Maybe he can comment on it.

I felt it was an improvement on the regular FS in the guitar I was using it in, but I can't get past the effect that hex screws have on the tone. I also tried a Screamin' Demon and felt the same way, though the effect is slightly less pronounced. It's too dry and scratchy with the hex screws, IMO. Definitely very articulate, but I prefer a smoother tone I guess. I also think the effect of the A8 magnet is less pronounced in the FS compared to other pickups. I attribute it to the hex screws again.

No, I wanted it but you sold it to someone else!

oh wait a minute - duh - it was Fusion1

Re: Full shred 8, JB8, C8 & double thick ceramics

I wish i had a FullShred8. Or a Demon 8. Can't find out much about those.

im assuming the FS5 is probably like a Petrucci D sonic or something very tight.
i can hear it in my head very well, but i think my amp would ruin its beauty, i gotta get rid of this DSL100.

I just go a Dimarzio Crunch Lab/Liquifire combo for my Basswood Dinky last night, so I'll let you know how it compares to the Full Shred that's coming out...
