Full Shred and Evolutions

both of these pickups sound really promising. since both of them are made to "shred", can anyone compare these two pickups tonally? would both be suitable for metal? hard rock? which one has more "crunch/grind"?

to me, the full shred is shred-worthy in the neck... don't fancy it in the bridge.

I love it in the bridge, myself. It's a great shred pickup...not too much juice and great note seperation. I can imagine the neck version being an awesome pup...the bridge version is pretty 'clean' sounding to me, even under heavy distortion.

right on. the FS is one of the few humbuckers in the neck to manifest single note definition at high gain...

Re: Full Shred and Evolutions

The full shred bridge is a great pickup. I just got one (again) and it sounds great!!! I am using it in a Les Paul and I playing through a Marshall 2555SL (Slash) with a Marshall 1960 AV cab. I love it in that setup. I had one a number of years ago thta I used to play through a Line 6 pod into a Peavey 2x12 solid state and it sounded pretty good but was a times a little thin in that setup. I say it really depends on your rig. If you have a warmer or bassier sounding rig, it should be really awsome!!!

About the evolution, Its the most unique sounding pickup I have ever played. Its hard for me to explain. I think it would sound great for the right player but it is not my cup of tea.

Re: Full Shred and Evolutions

The Full Shred has more emphasis on the high end while the Evolution has more emphasis on the low end. They are my two favorite pickups. Neither are great at fast palm muted speed metal playing. The FS is to bright and the Evolution is too dark and boomy. But if you play very riff heavy music both work well. Both have a great cutting lead tone and both have very good harmonics.

I HOPE they are very differnt. I just ordered a FS and hated the evolution. The evolution is my least favorite pikup of all time. Its so hot it sounds small and compressed and theres a little tiny top end with a wooly bottom.

I think they are a differnt class of pickup. The FS is medium output and the evolution is high. Compare the evolution to super distortion type.

Re: Full Shred and Evolutions

One problem I had with the Evolution is I got a nasty mid range warble out of it. I repotted it and that went away. I also use a small resistor on the hot lead to clean it up a little bit. I also use a small resistor on the FS to tame it a little otherwise theres to much hash going on.

How do you put a resitor on a pickup?? In series with one of the coils? What value?

Re: Full Shred and Evolutions

What I do first is build a test rig. I get two jacks. Then I solder the ground lugs together with a length of wire. Then I solder two wires to the hot lugs and put alligator clips on the two ends. Then I just experiment with different resistor values. I like 1/4 watt resistors 1-10k 5% tolerance. I usually just use a 5K. Don't worry about the resistor adding to noise it is always noisier outside the guitar than in it!
I don't know what it does in terms of inductance, etc, etc. Although I would be interested in knowing! It does change resistance slightly.

The resistor gives a less hairy sound that is a bit more focused and has more punch. It also seems to let the pickup BREATHE more giving better control over dynamics. I use it with ALL of my high output pickups like the FS, Evolution, Super 2 and DD. If I like it I just solder a resistor in line with the hot wire at the jack. That way I can remove it easily if I change my mind.

It isn’t as strange an idea as you might think after all a lot of mod kits for tube amps are just different resistors/capacitors for the input jacks on an amplifier. I have mentioned this kind of mod 100's of times on this board and most people say I am full of **** without ever trying it themselves!

Re: Full Shred and Evolutions

i have the evolutions in my jem and the full shred in my strat, the full shred is has a biting sound but it certainly does have quite some bass output on my 2 amps (5150 half stack and marshal avt150 combo) its a really great sounding pickup but doesnt do smooth, with the jem the evolution i tend to like to add a little bass and roll off the treble on the amp setting compared to the full shred. the evolution with a lot of treble can sound harsh, though its a very smooth sounding pickup with not a lot of bite in the neck or bridge. the neck evolution i have tends to be higher output than the bridge and certainly is a booming loud pickup. i know one thing and thats that i turn down the bass with the full shred because it tends to sound a little muddy with the extra bass i use on the evolution.
