Full Shred, any love???

I just re-inherited my old '86 Ibanez Roadstar 2 with a Floyd type trem that I had a Full Shred and a '59 neck put in. I am surprised how much I STILL like it in that guitar!

Based on how traditional I have become tone wise over the last few years I expected to not dig that pup anymore; but for lead work that thing really shines at least with my playing and my amps.

Anyone else still dig those unique pups???

Re: Full Shred, any love???

I've never tried one in the bridge, but I heartily endorse it for the neck. I've got one in the neck of a Jackson Dinky, and it's amazing how it cuts without being harsh. It's loud, open, and it makes for the most three-dimensional neck position of any of my shred sticks.

You mean the neck model? Or the bridge model put in the neck position???

I don't recall ever hearing a Full Shred neck pup before, I may have to stick one on this guitar now and see how it does with the bridge model:scratchch

Neck model pickup in the neck position. I don't go in for that neck-in-the-bridge or bridge-in-the-neck crap. I have it set up with a 5-way Superswitch, and I can run the two coils of the Full Shred in series or parallel, and I can also take the rear coil in parallel with the front coil of the bridge pickup. Those options are pretty Strat-like and add lots of versatility to the guitar.

Re: Full Shred, any love???

So you wouldn't put a bridge model pickup in the neck ever is what you're saying?

If you consider the Burstbucker 2 to be the bridge pickup from a vintage-oriented BB1/BB2 set, then yes, I have that pickup in the neck position of a BB2/BB3 set. But I don't sit around thinking, "Gee, I wonder how a JB neck model would sound in the bridge of a '61 SG reissue with a Floyd Rose Speed-loader bridge and some corksniffer caps." Also, if I have an A2Pro humbucker for the bridge but really wish I had one for the neck, I don't put it in the neck and hope that it's close or better. If I want an A2P in the neck, I'll buy an A2P for the neck.

Re: Full Shred, any love???

Yeah I gotcha. If it was one of those things where you have lets say an X2N (mad output) in the bridge and love the A2Pn but it doesnt match up with output but refuse to try an A2Pb in the neck I'd be like "dude?!?!?!" haha.

One of my all time favorites. Detail, Clarity, Thick with Presence. Phater version of Screaming Demon, Not Harsh or Souless, but Blazing anti-mush, Great with high gain distortion. Makes everything in the effects chain sound better... Haven't tried it in the neck though. Should be cool with Alnico 2, 4 and 8. ;)

Re: Full Shred, any love???

This is a funny thought. Think about it like Seymour designed a DiMarzio...

Damn, I need a Dean Elite Caddy to put a set in. A White one with black binding and pickups, (sorry, went off there) ;)

I put a Full Shred into the neck of a Warmoth Tele 22 years ago, and a Hot Rails in the bridge. Both are split for series, parallel and single coil. Any 2 in any combination through a Tele 3-way switch and two minis. The full shred bridge pup mounted in the neck posioion really produces great sounds. The bridge Hot Rails can be a little overpowering in series but in parallel and tapped to single its sweet. I sprayed the guitar and maple neck with with nitro using a PreVail kit back then. Got it on too thick and it took almost 15 years to really dry out and cure to the point of longitudinal checking and real Tele Twang. But it still produces LP sounds in the neck position. It was well worth the wait but fortunately I had an '83 LP Spotlight Special and an '87 Vintage Reissue VW Strat to se me through. I have it posted in the Warmoth Gallery if anyone wants to see it. Just ask me for the link should you want to see it.

Hey Ark

How about an amp pics thread ? Pwetty pweese ?

Anyway those Roadstar IIs are wicked-cool aren't they? Fat maple necks, not that Wizard crap

So I had the Full Shred in a different kind of Ibby, one with a thin, Wizard profile neck, not enough neckwood beef for legato stuff, which is half my trip. This axe was for alt-pickin speedsters like Al Di Meola. So I dumped that sleek, black, single-p'up'd beauty, she with the Edge Zero trem. Traded it for an Uberkab. Gorgeous guitar, hated to see it go.

Ima tell you what though Mr. Mister, the result of that Fully Shredding p'up in that basswood Prestige was riffs of pure and smoothly confident evil.

Here is the Prestige I had with the Full Shred, great pickup, I'd love to try it in other guitars.

Re: Full Shred, any love???

I just got done throwin a FULL SHRED (BRIDGE) in th neck as a matter of speaking and it is balls out bad as HELL!!!..I have a Dimebucker in th bridge, in a Jackson DK2. I thought "WTF!".....I Guess im one of those guys that do what your NOT supposed to do.

Re: Full Shred, any love???

I've got the Full Shred Set in my neckthru Iceman. They give me the best of both worlds (Clean & Dirty). Being that they are Alnico V, I can dial in some spanky cleans and High Gain Chunk that'll kick your teeth in. But yet every note shines through loud and clear. They are easily the most versatile High Output Pickups in the SD Line I've tried. I can't say that about any other High Output Duncan. The Full Shred is a very underrated pickup IMO. Not only can it do 80's Cock Rock but it can handle the lowest of Drop Tunings with ease. I'm surprised there aren't many Metal Guitarists (from this decade) endorsing them. I've got MUCH LOVE for the Full Shred !!!

Re: Full Shred, any love???

you guys say they are thick but i hear they dont have much lowend. i am having trouble understanding

Re: Full Shred, any love???

The thickness comes from the lower midrange. They probably don't have as much bass as some pickups, but that is one of the reasons they work well with distortion. It keeps it from getting muddy or losing clarity or detail, even with drop tunings. Love it.

Re: Full Shred, any love???

I'm sure I would have loved the FS years ago, but these days I feel like it's too crunchy. I like a smoother sound.
