full shred with a2 magnet = a more articulate custom custom?

The title says it all.

Just wondering if an a2 will give the fs a little softer attack. Also, will it become to middy and lacking in bass and treble?

You always hear about a8 and ceramic swaps. How about other mags? A3? A4? Uoa5?

Bridge or neck?

I was referring to the Bridge.

I do have both though. I find the neck a bit bassy for my tastes. A4 to fix?

I have a full shred bridge, which did not not fit my bill. I tried a a8 in it, but there are still better pickups for classic rock and blues.

Not a mag pro - but I can't imagine that being the case.

A3? A4? Uoa5?

I have a gut feeling this won't make anything resembling a good sounding pickup. Swap the polepieces and/or maybe air it. Better yet, skip the mods altogether and swap it for a more appropriate pickup.

Agreed.

An A4 in the neck sounds great, but when I tried swapping the bridge mag it was a mess.

I'd try a Full Shred with an A2 or UOA5. For what I play, blues and classic rock, I think it's worth a try. Only takes a few minutes to do a mag swap. I really like an A2 in a JB. If you don't like it, you can always put the original mag back in.

I've done both A2 and UOA5. With A2 it sounded a bit thinner, maybe like a thinner Custom Custom or something. It didn't really do it for me. UOA5 was the ticket, but it lost a bit of output. All it basically did was make the Full Shred slightly more polite. It's not a big difference. I prefer the Full Shred as is, but if I had to choose another magnet, it would be a UOA5.

Thanks darth, uber, and blueman. I knew there had to be somebody inquisitive enough to try some weaker magnets in the fs.

I've been reading up on a4 swaps today and will try it out for the neck fs.

the bridge pickup is great as it is but I want to tweak it a bit. I have some regular polepieces lying around but haven't gotten around to trying them out yet. I figure next time I change strings, I try some mags for the heck of it.
a2 and uoa5 are on the list for the bridge, and an a4 for the neck. A8 seems a bit much from what I've heard.

I can always try them out in my norton as well. I remember someone posting detailed clips of different mags in a norton as well as airing and halfing airing it. Wish I could find it again.

Thanks gentlemen

I think you get the most interesting results by combining two opposites, like weak magnets in high output PU's, warm magnets in bright PU's, and bright magnets in warm PU's. The contrast makes for a more interesting and complex sound. You get qualities of both coming thru, a richer contrast, a blend of characteristics.

To me, some of the least-appealing sounds are when the PU's and magnets both push in the same direction, like a high output PU with a high output magnet, a bright magnet in a bright PU, and a warm magnet in a warm PU. Just too much of the same thing.

Blueman, or anyone with the experience experimenting with it, tell me about the screw/hex poles. I heard that you can get brass, nickel, and some other materials. They say that brass screw poles are a bit warmer. Is that true? Would it make an audible difference?

You want to ask someone who winds PU's.

I have to agree for the most part...I love the DD with an A2, and the '59 sounds much better IMO with an A8. But I also like the Custom with an A8.
