Fullshred - how does it compare to..?

..pickups like the Dimarzio super 3, duncan jb, cc, c5, and 59?

In terms of tone, that is.

I'm sick of the fullshred because it sounds too thin for me, and i want to change it out

I think i remember the tone chart saying that the FS and JB have the same ammount of treble, yet people seem to advise people to stay away from putting a jb in a basswood bodied guitar, while fullshred is recommended?

Also, not taking into account the wood, output, or genre..

..how would the fullshred compate tonewise to the above mentioned pickups?

I'm relying on your words when choosing, so be kind and honest!

Thanks!,
Chris

What kind of guitar woods (neck and body), and what sound are you looking for?

Re: Fullshred - how does it compare to..?

The FS I had had a decent tone- it kind of reminded me of a cross between a SH5 and a C-5- warmer than the custom, but without the bass response-kinda similar to a JB in bass, but tighter. Very clear and articulate in the Nightswan, but ultimately not my kind of pup. I think it would sound best in an all mahogany set neck guitar without a maple cap.

IME, basswood and dimarzio are like peanut butter & jelly-it just works. SuperD, Super3, Norton, Air Zone, etc all work really well in basswood- dimarzios have a sort of "3 dimensional hi-fi" sound to them and most have tons of low end and low mids that addresses basswoods natural tone: compressed mids and highs without a ton of low end. The DiMarzios just fill in and open the guitar up better than Duncans, IME.

It seems to me like a JB would go well in any guitar. Its a sweet pickup. Less than 2 weeks ago I took a chance on a Dimarzio norton and to my delight it was a lot like the JB only better. The JB is staying in my Jackson. It is perfect for Megadeth and Satriani. I have no idea what it sounds like clean because it is too much fun to play in overdrive.

If we do have to get into that, it's an ibanez with a basswood body and edge pro tremolo.

In the end, it's too thin for me, and i want something butey but still thick and non-thin, pretty much.

thrashmetal is my genre of choice.

thanks Jeff, yeah im eyeing dimarzios but since they have a reputation of having a little less open sound than duncans for some reason i dont know, it scares me somehow that if i dont like it im stuck with it. :p

Depends on which DiMarzio- if you want open, then def stay away from the Super3- its dark and very compressed.

I think a Super Distortion, AZ, or some of the Vai pickups (Evo, etc) are probably more up your alley for thrash stuff and will fill out a floyd type guitar nicely and still stay tight.

Find an F-Spaced Evolution neck for the bridge.

PAF Pro and Double Whammy are the two DiMarzio pups I think of that counter Seymour Duncan's Full Shred. Both have a subtle "aw" sound. I feel the PAF Pro more transparent than the Double Whammy; the Double Whammy is more thick when hearing it.
