Fulltone 69 fuzz

is this thing IT?.....id like to get a great hendrix tone(and dont give me the old "it was in his fingers blah blah, im lookin for that searing lead tone similar to his) , but i dont want too buzzy and muddy as other fuzz pedals ive tried...... i'd be running it into my already cookin hiwatt DR103, which is already a bit broken up.....sounding like Pete Townshends type of overdrive.....nice and huge and smooth, not very distorted

ive heard fuzz pedals into old cranked british amps and its thee TONE, and thats basically what id be workin with (also using a strat)

most of all i need it be clean, in the sense that i dont want alot of extra mush, a great lead tone like hendrix had....and also work well on bluesy funky rhythm chords without that strange flabby puttering bottom end ive heard on a few fuzz pedals ive used...

but id also be using this for some zeppelin stuff, so does it have some versatility? i see it has contour and bias knobs, so its probably capable of a few cool tones correct?

see, i know this cost some big bucks comparatively to other pedals, but i dont wanna spend time searching anymore, i want the best that i can get

theres also a used dallas arbiter fuzz face reissue at a shop by me sellin for $75....anybody have any experience with this pedal? it doesnt seem like it would be as versatile as the fulltone? hmmm....

thanks for any help guys, i hope i conveyed exactly what im lookin for

Re: Fulltone 69 fuzz

Hey Flank, The '69 is the best FUZZ FACE pedal I've ever used and I've tried many. The '69 and a Clyde Wah Wah combo gets the closest to Jimi's tone of anything I've ever used. For Zep stuff, I don't hear that being a Fuzz Face tone...a DS-1 will do it tho. I often plug my Tele into a DS-1 with everything on about 1/2, into anything from a tweed Deluxe to my tweed Bassman and I can get great Zepplin tones. Plus I can leave the DS-1 on all the time, like Satch and Vai do, and go from overdriven to crunchy clean to almost sparkling clean tones by just turning down my Tele's volume control to 1/2 way or more. The DS-1, '69 and Clyde Deluxe Wah are the three most used pedals in my stash. I sold my Experiance Pedal...that was supposed to be Jimi in a box but I never really got into it. Lew

well ive got a DS1 also..... never really tried to dial in some zeppelin tones.....but i suppose your right, it does sound similar to zeppelin, im talkin the tone on the song The Ocean......thats the stuff i dig

yeah, the 69 sounds like a pretty sweet pedal man, anybody have any experience with it?......and just for kicks, did you try the 70' pedal? seems it might be a bit hot and gainy for my liking?

Re: Fulltone 69 fuzz

The other guitrist in our band had one for a while. As he has two small children at home he would bring his new pedals over to rehersal to try out at a gig volume. I got to sit a listen to him workout all sorts of stuff.

Regarding the 69, no matter how he set the controls that thing sounded musical. It was VERY versital and gives the goods from light to nasty fuzz. I was very impressed with it. I'd tell anybody to buy one. Great FUZZ!

Re: Fulltone 69 fuzz

I had one, but sold it to buy some other unrelated pedal. I wish I had it back, and may buy one in the future. They really are great pedals. They can be set low for a boost, or get into the higher gain fuzz setting. Like all Fuzz's, it gets a little noisy set high, but that's part of the sound. When I bought it, I A/B'd it with the 70 pedal.
I unplugged the 70 quickly. It's thinner and harsher sounding. I love all the Fulltone stuff. It sounds great, looks great, and holds resale value. What more can you ask for? Go buy one.

Re: Fulltone 69 fuzz

Try to get a Bosstone

It is slightly better sounding (Creamer/Fuller) than the 69Fuzz that replaced it.

Re: Fulltone 69 fuzz

Hi flank.

Yeah, the '69 is a great pedal. very cool indeed. authentic hendrix tone to the max. true bypass as well. The '70 is also incredible. I have nothing but great things to say about Mike Fuller. His customer service is excellant as well.

The '70 has more fuzz than the '69. It is a bit tweaky, but once I found the sweet spot, it was a love thang. If you have the chance, set it like this:

volume @ 2 o'clock, mids @ 3, fuzz @ 4, and the internal trimmer set at about 10 o'clock (a slight bias to the "snarl & spit" tonality. I do have to say that the '70 really came alive with my Bogner. So, the amp, the guitar, the technique all have a lot to do with your final tone.

BTW, when using either the '69 or '70, keep the guitar volume at about 9. Wide open will just fuzz it out completely. Learn to use the guitar volume more like a gain control.

Re: Fulltone 69 fuzz

hey thanks alot all you guys.......so whats the going price on the 69? any places i could find one used?

Re: Fulltone 69 fuzz

The 70 uses silicon diodes, right? I believe the 69 uses NKT-275's, which are necessary for authentic Hendrix.

Re: Fulltone 69 fuzz

I searched for a month for a used one and finally gave up bought it new. $169 direct from Mike Fuller. Sounds better with a old style (carbon?) battery than it does with the battery eliminator or alkaline battery. Mike's totally right about that. Use the Everyready Classic or something like that...not a modern, long lasting alkaline battery. Noticably smoother tone, IMO. http://www.fulltone.com/stpframe.html Lew

The '70 uses one germanium and one silicon, intentionally mismatched to get the unique tone.

Re: Fulltone 69 fuzz

one more question, how much sustain will this pedal add to my amp? my hiwatt kicks so much A S S but it lacks a bit in sustain........thats what i lookin for in this pedal is to give me a great sustaining lead tone

It'll sustain beautifully, but I always use it in conjunction with Mike's Clyde Deluxe wah wah to shape the notes and squeeze them out like SRV and Hendrix did. Truthfully, I think the DS-1 is more versatile and might even sustain better...but if it's Hendrix you want the '69 is the one to get. It sounds like the Hendrix tones I hear in my head. It's a total blast to finally nail those tones after 35 years.

Re: Fulltone 69 fuzz

well i do use the DS1 already in conjuction with the hiwatt (DS1 is set very light with tone halfway and distortion on 2 or 3), and it gives it more character and some more punch and crunch......im gettin a pretty mean ACDC type of sound of it now.......however i dont have that fully saturated lead tone that im lookin for, where i can do those monsterous full note bends that will just hang up in the air forever, basically i need to WAIL, if you know what im sayin, just get down with my bad self, funk it out, just frickin melt faces as Jack Black says........although im not talking in a metal-type of shred, still classic rock through and through

somethin along the lines of the solo in Manic Depression........his guitar is just screaming

There ya go...that's the '69 Pedal. You need one!

That Hiwatt is a beaut but it isn't a Marshall...I never got along with Hiwatts. They hurt my ears. To bright, powerful and clean and not crunchy and chunky like a Marshall.

Re: Fulltone 69 fuzz

i understand what your saying......somethin is differnt about this hiwatt, its one of the smoothest and warmest beasts ive ever heard......it roars, oh man it ROARS!!

yet it still doesnt have the crunch of a marshall, however, i have grown to appreciate the sheer wall of sound my hiwatt puts out, ive never heard anything like it.....

Re: Fulltone 69 fuzz

The fulltone '69 is the best, phattest, smoothest, most s**t-hot fuzz pedal I've ever tried. I'm still having dreams about it.

Check out the '69 and the '70 as well. go to www.fulltone.com for full details.
