Fun idea with Epi PAFs, combine the two adjustable coils?

Just though it would be cool to see how it sounded. I've had a pair of Epi hums for a while and they are a little dark. Not sure of their magnet types. But after successfully doing a magnet swap with my SDs I figured the next chance I get I'd try to swap coils lol.

I may even do it for the slug coils too. And make them 4 conductor, they aren't as they are. And also wire each hum to choose which coil to ground when splitting. Maybe a little overboard but still sounds fun. I have an old Samick Explorer I could put them in.

Food for thought?

Only do it for experience. The pups aren't worth the effort (tonewise). Hybridding pups can make some pretty good results...the C/59 is the result of a forumite's experimentation that caught on. But with the Epi pups, you're starting with muddy, toneless coils to begin with.

But like I said, it's good to gain some experience in hybriddizing and creating a 4 conductor pup out of a 2 cond.

Pepe (LtKojak) uses Epiphone humbuckers as paperweights. I'm guessing that he leaves the protective clear film on over the fiiister screw heads.

Thanks for the input!

I deffinately don't expect much in tone or anything, really just wanna do it for the fun of an experiment. If i botch it im not out anything, lol. I may even get some hex head fillisters and just see if a different length will brighten them at all. I think they would look cool with black bolts and a cover.

I'll post my results whenever I get around to it.

I concur with Doc. The only thing to be learned is how to de-cover, dismantle and change output conductor cable.

Faced with the prospect of the necessary work to convert a single conductor + braided shield humbucker and just paying the going rate for a second pre-owned humbucker, I tend to do the latter.

It depends on what value you place on your time.

(He leaves the film on). Good one! LMAO.

My inclination would be to remove the Epiphone humbuckers as tidily as possible, photograph them, then offer them for sale on Craigslist, eBay or similar. Some low-budget project hound will snaffle them up. Put the proceeds towards one professional quality humbucker for the bridge/Treble position. Start saving for a second pickup.

In the meantime, manage by developing yo' picking hand techniques.

Epi Probuckers are good PU's; the ones they used prior to that are affectionately known here as 'mudbuckers.'

Yeah, Last year I bought an Epi LP Traditional Pro with probuckers. The guitar really sounds great. I love playing it.

With my past experience with Epi's (first thing I needed to do was replace the pups with Duncans), I'm programned to keep thinking everytime I play it that I need to replace the pups. But I can't imagine what I could put in it to make it sound substantially better than it already sounds. Changing pups is a strong impulse to overcome.

Oh, I'm sure there are many Duncans that would sound better, but not enough to justify a change (like with previous Epi's). So for now, the probuckers stay.

Have in mind that the polepiece spread in both p'ups are different, and metric.

The neck p'up, known as "57CH", is 50mm, while the bridge p'up, known as "HOTCH", is 52mm, which impedes the creation of a hybrid using one coil of each p'up.

However, the "57CH" can be used as a bridge p'up, if you change the baseplate with a nickelsilver one like this one:

change the screws with these:

and use this magnet:

With all these changes, it'll sound usable, at least.

HTH,
