Funk pedals & stompboxes?

I have decided to have my sound thru pedals and now i need some tips on what to look at. I want the best man can get. On my grocery list are the following:

Phaser
Wah-wah
Overdrive

Hit me with your suggestions!

Re: Funk pedals & stompboxes?

A tubescreamer. It's got Cult status.

The secret behind the tubescreamer is that it "knows" better than other overdrive pedals how to squeeze the most out of your amp. It can amplify the sound without too much gain, although it has a great overdrive. The El Raton is basically the same but has a higher gain on the overdrive.

Re: Funk pedals & stompboxes?

Phaser:
Well any old Boss or Ibanez phaser would be quite the funky, everything from 70's from those makers!
Wah-wah:
Hmm depends on what kinda wah you want!
Overdrive:
Way too many, what sounds do you like??

Re: Funk pedals & stompboxes?

I want a nice 70's sounding phaser which i can control speed with.

I want a 70's funky sounding wah, no modern chacka-chacka.

For OD,well, think Sly and the family stone, Parliament. Just some mild-medium overdrive.

Re: Funk pedals & stompboxes?

auto-wah/envelope filter, I would say ;)

YUP! I had a old 70's MXR Envelope Filter that sounded great! I regret parting with it.:smack: I have a 80's DOD phasor That works well ,And can be had very cheap on evilbay.

Re: Funk pedals & stompboxes?

A crappy compressor with a late response is always good for the attack, too. A "good" compressor generally tries to sound like it's not on at all. Good for audio, bad for funky sledgehammer pick attack.

Re: Funk pedals & stompboxes?

+1 to the compressor idea . . . i'd put a compressor above the phaser for funk playing actually. I'd recommend a 595Q Crybaby wah (definately does some great funky sounds), a Boss, Marshall, or MXR compressor, and I'm very fond of the BD-2 for funky light - moderate overdrive. (I think there's someone selling one in the trading post right now too for 40$, so if you're lucky you could get that.) I've only used the Boss PH-3 and I don't think that it's great for funk style phasing.

Re: Funk pedals & stompboxes?

Vox wah
MXR Phase 90
some sort of envelope filter
TS808

A little flanger might be cool too.

Re: Funk pedals & stompboxes?

Vox Wah, Phase 90, Tubescreamer, a Boss compressor, and a Boss delay pedal would round out the whole pedal board for me.

Re: Funk pedals & stompboxes?

About the Vox wah. Are the new one's good? What is special to there claude McCoy wah against the regular one?

Re: Funk pedals & stompboxes?

Electro Harmonix - Small Stone phaser
Dan Armstrong - Orange Squeeze compressor
DOD - Envelope Filter

Re: Funk pedals & stompboxes?

Mutron Evelope filter. If you cant buy one, build one.

This site is in Spanish, but search for "Sonidas" and it'll take you to some soundclips of the Mutron build: http://www.pisotones.com/MuTron-III/MuTronIII.htm

+1 on the Orange Squeezer. If you cant buy a used one, they're pretty easy/cheap to build.

As for phase, There's tons of options. you really cant go wrong with a vintage Small Stone, though I'm not sure if they suck tone when bypassed like some vintage pedals do.

As for an OD, I can't comment since I'm not a funk player, but I'd imagine anything from the "tube screamer family" would be fine. SD-1, OD-3, TS-9, TS-7, TS-808, Arion Tubulator, Bad Monkey, Blues Driver are all options / implementations of pretty much the same circuit.

Re: Funk pedals & stompboxes?

Electroharmonix Dr Q Envelope filter
do not get this pedal, it sucks. its an envelope FOLLOWER not a filter. i sold mine because it was so lame.

od - tubescreamer
wah - cry baby or a q-tron
flanger - bad stone, if you can find one.

The only difference between the standard 847 and the Clyde McCoy is that the Clyde's mids are centered differently. To my ear, the Clyde's mids are a little lower than the 847.

You can also check out the clips of each of Vox's product page:

Clyde McCoy

Re: Funk pedals & stompboxes?

I would prefer some envelope filter or auto-wah over a rocker wah for the tone and the parameters.
