Fuzz off!

I just picked up a Dunlop Dallas-Arbiter Fuzz Face and this thing is an absolute blast!! Excellent quality pedal that i happened to stumble upon while looking into the new Hendrix one and since i really liked em both the same, i went with the one that saved me a few bucks! By itself this thing is so much fun but when played with a wah, well you know!!!! :approve: So which Fuzz is everyone using?

Re: Fuzz off!

My fist full of fuzz includes a Big Muff Pi, a Fulltone Ultimater Octave and a Duncan Tweak Fuzz but the one Im using mostly these days is an AnalogMan modded Arbiter-England Fuzz Face

Re: Fuzz off!

Here are my fuzzy-wuzzies. Not shown is the Foxrox CC2 with a hybrid Fuzz Card and Octavia. The real Muff is a 70's modded IC, and the black box is a clone of the Way Huge Swollen Pickle.

Re: Fuzz off!

For the longest time I never got in to fuzz boxes (more of an overdrive guy) until the last couple years when I started messing around with DIY circuits and such. I've got a Fuzz Face on the breadboard right now (NPN version) that's sounding pretty good. Spent last night adjusting the bias and tweaking things here and there. I need to measure the Hfe leakage of the transistors though so I can get them set right - meaning the lower gain in the first position (gotta make another tool for that). Sounds good so far though.

Re: Fuzz off!

I'm not currently using a fuzz. But I still own the Big Muff I bought in the '70s.

I bought the Dunlop version of the Fuzzface, and it's just not anywhere as good as the originals. I'll probably adopt a Joe Gagan Fuzzface circuit to it. One of his hybrid silicon/germanium designs. Put it together on a perfboard. The Dunlop version can work ok if I use it with a boost pedal. I just don't like it's actual Fuzzface sound.

What interests me right now is the Dunlop Lava Box:

They have a Quicktime video demo of it now. It has some good sounds.

Nice gainy sounds with plenty of grind. I'm very likely to get one of those.

Re: Fuzz off!

I love the Sun Lion. It's actually my latest pedal acquisition around Christmas time. The fuzz portion is just killer as TGWIF can attest to. The boost portion is very nice as well, and combining them really gets a great Sabbathy style dommy sound. I'm not really an OD or distortion pedal guy, I love what fuzzes and boosts do to amps.

If you are looking for a Ge Fuzz Face, beg borrow or otherwise scrape up enough to order the Analogman NKT Sun Face. His transistors won't last forever, and it really is that good I think.

Two others that I always grab for are the Skreddy Zero and Swollen Pickle clone. They are both interpretations of the Muff sound, the Zero cuts a little better than a stock muff does, and seems to have more mids. It's equally at home doing leads or 90's style alt rock. The Swollen Pickle is just massive. Imagine going from a typical fuzz to a muff, that's the difference between a muff and the Pickle. Great wall of fuzz and sludgy tone. Unfortunately thr ultra scooped mids can get lost in a band, but you just need two Thunderverb 200's to push the volume. ;)

I know there are guys here with way cooler stuff I can't wait to see. :)

Well i never tried an original but the Dunlop version is great imo!!!!

Re: Fuzz off!

The Sunlion is one of the best units out there IMO for boost and fuzz tones...I have the AM Modded Fuzz Face and an AM Beano Boost...I opted to get it in 2 seperate boxes so I could alter the order of each plus I wanted a Fuzz face that still looked like a Fuzz Face...the world is full of plenty of square stomp boxes!
